Hi! DH and I are about to be put on the waiting list for domestic adoption. We are stationed in Minot, ND and will be here until Nov, 2007. I have a couple of questions regarding references. How many do you usually need? And also, will they interview or inquire about your neighbors? We have great ones on one side and not so good on the other. The not so good ones don't seem to like us (don't know why, we aren't loud or anything) so I don't know what they would say about us. Also, has anyone adopted around this area? The average total wait is 3 years, so hopefully things will go relatively smoothly and we will have our child when dh gets out of the military and we move south. Otherwise we will start the process over when we move.
Thanks!

I'm not sure what your State's requirements are, but for our homestudy our social worker asked for 5 referrals - 3 friends and 2 family members. She provided a form letter that we sent to the referrals asking them to describe certain aspects about us. The referrals were sent directly to the social workers although one of our friend's sent us a copy of her response. The social worker said all the responses were positive. None of our neighbor's were approached or referrals from them required.
We received our State and INS certification last March.
Good luck to you. Three years seems like a long wait, but I'm sure it will be worth it

the same is true of our situation during our domestic adoption in California. Letters were sent to our references and their responses were sent directly to our social worker. Our neighbors were not involved.
In Illinois for "me".....The lady that did the homestudy didn't ask anything about our neighbors, She looked at our home to see that it would be safe and fit for a child. She did ask us background questions to do with our life and how we meet , how our up bringing was, our marriage etc. She asked for 3 refs and she got a hold of them. Non family.
It will go okay
Good luck.
I was so nervous about it all which I think is natural, but it was a piece of cake.
Will be thinking of ya. Hope it goes fast for you all.
We had to have 3 refrence letters.....all non-family. The social worker looked around our house and talked with us about parenting issues. Just remember, the laws are different in every state.

For our domestic adoption in Michigan, we had to supply 3 non-family reference letters. The agency & social worker didn't talk to any of our family members or neighbors.
