Default Generic Synthroid question

I've been told that brand name Synthroid is different than the various generic brands. I'd been taking brand name Synthroid, but then employee at the pharmacy told me a couple of months ago that there was a new generic on the market that's identical to brand name Synthroid, it's called Levothroxin. My doc approved it so that's what I got. Today I transferred that prescription to a pharmacy closer to home and the pharmacist filled it with a different brand, he pointed it out to me but said it was the same thing but by a different manufacturer. The name of the drug I got today is Levothroid.

Usually I get generic prescriptions when available and trust that they're the same drug, but I've been told that it's not that way when it comes to thyroid hormone. Does anyone know if Levothroxin and Levothroid are really same thing?

I do not have an answer for you but would like to know myself. I was just diagnosed last week and started my "synthroid" (25mcg) this morning. When I picked it up from the pharmacy it was levoth...something. Guess I need to ask my doctor when I see him in a couple of weeks. Good luck.

Yes, there is a difference. I have never been able to get a straight answer out of anyone, whether it be an endo or a pharmacist, but I know that Synthroid does no good for me and never has. I take Levoxyl (the generic of Synthroid, and it isn't new - I've been on it for 6 years. Not sure if Levothroxine is a new generic or not, but levothyroxine is the chemical name for any of those), was up to 157mcg, but was just knocked back down to 125mcg because my TSH dipped down to less than .01.

Like I said, I've been doing this for six, no actually, seven now, years..... I've educated more than one doctor on my condition and have done a lot of research. I'm relatively new here and new to PCOS in general (Just got my DX today! Yay! Start Metformin tonight!!), but I'm an old hand when it comes to hypothyroidism.
