Exclamation Getting LHR & have been told to "trim" chin hairs!

I've finally decided to bite the bullet and pay for lazer on my chin and upper lip. I've been told I cannot pluck anymore so that the hair can grow back in, and to "trim with a scissor".

Trim with a scissor??? Are you kidding me????

Ladies... what can I do instead? Can I just shave it instead? I usually spend about 1/2 hour every night plucking and am afraid of razor bumps from shaving... but I cannot go around with a beard for the next month.

No, they're not kidding.

Laser Hair Reduction depends on the hair to be damaged being darker than your skin and so absorbing more of the heat from the laser than your skin does and that heat then being conducted down the shaft of the hair to the root and, hopefully, damaging the root sufficiently to stop it growing properly again.

The laser treatment can attack only those parts of your moustache and beard where the hairs are actually exposed to the laser heat.

Obviously you don't want to go around for days or weeks with obvious moustache and beard growth.

Most LHR treatment centers are usually happy enough if you shave during the whole period you're undergoing courses of LHR treatment. Another option is to use a beard trimmer, but that's not nearly as close as shaving.

So basically, for many women it means that even if you've been using another method of hair removal such as plucking, waxing, mechanical epliation , threading, chemical depilatories or whatever, you've probably got to take up shaving for the next 4 - 12 months or however long it takes.

You may find that using a men's-type electric razor is less problematic and will almost certainly be more acceptable than wearing a moustache and beard for weeks at a time.

My laser tech told me to shave. It's worked just fine. While you cannot wax or pluck, I've never heard of any reason why you would have to trim it with scissors.

I shaved between sessions, and I still had incredible results. It is a LOT to get used to - if you pluck, you're used to just seeing a few hairs at a time, but when you shave, you'll see them ALL at once. It's scary the first few times!

In the end, though, it is SO worth this hassle!

At least you realize the extent of the beard you're getting rid of.

Thank you all so much for your responses! I got myself a remington electric shaver and it works pretty well. Takes two seconds. I can still see black dots all over my chin but makeup covers it up pretty well, I think. VivC, you are right about it being scary - the hairs are multiplying every day! I am anxious to get to that first session!!!

How many sessions before you ladies noticed any difference? Any bad side effects or rashes from the treatment?

ck - I also just started LHR in January and the going from plucking to shaving was, well, traumatic LOL! I have my third treatment on the 24th, but I think I am seeing a difference as my face seems to have some areas where the shed hairs haven't come back yet (last treatment was 17 Feb), but I still feel the need to shave every evening after I shower... Probably from all the plucking causing the hairs to grow back at different rates. I am also getting my armpits and happy trail/bikini line done, and have definitely noticed that I don't need to shave those areas quite as frequently... Anyhoo, I don't shave the night before treatments though, as that seems to make it easier for my tech to see where the problem areas are and to catch the "Outliers" that sprout in odd places! Dianna

Just remind yourself that the hairs aren't multiplying - you're just seeing more of them at once.

I had incredible results. After five sessions (they recommend up to ten for PCOS sufferers), I only have about eight hairs left. And I started with a full beard - it wasn't patchy at all! In a few years, I'll probably finish zapping them, but for now, plucking eight hairs once a week is perfectly doable!

ckcahn: I noticed the hairs on my chin/lip started to grow more slowly after the first session. It took a few weeks to see it though. They say you should see a huge difference after the third treatment. I just finished my 5th treatment last week and let me tell you, its like night and day. I can't believe I waited so long to have this done, I love the results.

Side effects: Sometimes I get one or two little acne like bumps the day after a session that lasts around 3 days. But I have very sensitive skin, so it reacts like that sometimes. Those bumps however are not considered acne, but rather a reaction some people have to laser. I just put natural aloe vera on it and thats it.

I am so glad to have read your post. I just got the laser done 3 days ago and I still have bumps on my chin I was freaking out! There are a lot less of them today that the day after treatment. Do you use anything other that aloe?

I pay about the same. But I get my upper lip and chin area done also. When they did the chin is was bearable but when the dr. did the upper lip I had to have him stop and give me a breather. He zapped it about 6 times and stopped midway. I was a little teary at the end but I was ok. What freaked me out was the smell. I wasn't ready for the dead hair stink at all.

Hi everyone - Just wanted to give you an update. It's been 2 weeks since my first session of LHR on my chin and naval area. Every single dark hair has shed and for the first time in probably 10 or more years, I have no hair on my chin, and no dark shadow. Also, I always used to have little bumps from tweezing/ingrown hairs, or some minor irritation from shaving, and since I have not been plucking or shaving, I have no irritated skin either. This is the first time I've felt like I can leave the house without makeup, or like I can let my husband touch my face.

I'm hearing that the hairs are going to come back in... I'm sure I'll be moaning in a couple of weeks, and will be back to shaving again, but for now, I am SO THRILLED with the results. I wish I had done this sooner.

I prepaid for 3 sessions, both areas, and it cost $650 (with a 25% "bad economy" discount ). They used a machine called "Lightsheer" I think...
