Default Getting PCOS treatment from Dr/herbalist/specialist - any recommendations?

Hi all,

This is my first post here and I thought I'd start on my home turf with the NZ/Aussie cysters!

Anyway, here's my situation - I've been TTC for a year, I went to my Dr at 6 months TTC but she said that was too early to be concerned now that it's been a year I thought right time to do something, so I've been on a healthy kick, low GI, lots of exercise but only lost ... wait for this ... 0.5kgs! so back to the Dr I go thinking I would be going on Met but nooooooooo I now have to lose weight (well duh!), naturally, with no help for what I think is IR and she told me that I have to wait 18 months for a public referral to the fertility clinic ... aye?!! I thought it was 12 months!!

Has this happened to anyone else? Or do you have any advice?

I'm thinking, maybe a new Dr? I'm now 25 kgs overweight, irregular periods (I have them but I don't know when they'll get here!) and not to mention all the other lovely symptoms ...

Also, does anyone know any good, sympathetic GP's here in Hamilton? Or possibly even a good herbalist? Thanks for your help ladies

Ok first off the DRs in NZ I have spoken to said that with PCOS you only need to wait 6 months. Its a well known disorder for hindering pregnancy so best to get onto it earlier rather than later!

Secondly as for diet advice, I have lost loads of weight and cold take you through my deit? Check out my pictures and PM me if you want?

As for a great Dr in Hamilton, try the fairfield medical clinic and a DR Bhula, hes hard to get, but maybe if you let them know he came recommended? He is a man, but he put me on metformin (I dont take it now) and sent me to a specialist, I would love to show him how much weight I have lost now! He would be so proud lol.

As for herbal supliments i just started to take agnus castus from a pink box called famzone - works WONDERS!!! Start taking it now, its brill!

I come from Hamilton, but am now in Auckland, if you want to talk more let me know! I love to help out with PCOS where I can, I dont have kids yet, but I think the more I talk about it with people the more ready I will be when I start trying :O)

Can't help you with a doctor sorry but I hear you on the health kick! I've been doing FitCysters bootcamp for almost 7 weeks now and no movement on the measurements, scales and bodyfat. I've met with a nutritionist though who gave me a few pointers andt old me it might just take a bit longer but I'm definately doing all the right stuff. I'd actually be interested in getting a blood test because I feel like changes are happening for the better, just not on the outside!
Keep up the health kick while you search for the right doctor - just keep reminding yourself that even though the scales aren't moving, a good diet and plenty of exercise will do wonders for your general health! I think 18 months is a bit long, seek out another doctor and try get another refferal or a bit of a hurry up!

Hey Star, what hints/tips did the nutritionist give you, if you don't mind sharing?? I am always on the lookout for tips to keep the weight down/off!

She was happy with what I was eating. (which I was glad of - having done a nutrition degree I would have been disappointed if she wasn't!) She just wasn't happy with how I was fitting my meals around my work hours. I work 5-8 and she wanted me having another meal before I went. Which I probably did some days, but right now it was being cut cos I'm broke! lol
Sorry - not much help because I was already on track, I just needed tweaking (hence why I went in the first place, it was doing my head in not losing weight while exercising and eating the right things).

Thanks for your responses ... I was feeling pretty low after my Drs appointment on Friday, it's so easy to feel on your own with PCOS especially when dealing with a Dr who just doesn't understand but, frustratingly, holds all the cards as far as referring you on for fertility treatment!

Coolpunkgirl - thanks so much for your advice and recommending a Dr for me I'll definately be looking him up! And I thought 18 months was way too long! On the Fertility Associates website it says 12 months wait is plenty ... and I knew that, I'd looked it up (librarian by trade) I just doubted myself by the time the end of the appointment came ... anyway, I'm now getting an appointment with a herbalist in Hamilton who specialises in fertility so here's hoping ... I'll let you know how that goes for your future reference ...

Febraurystar - Thanks for the diet empathy! It is sooooooooo frustrating to be doing all the hard yards and not seeing any difference. My Dr went through my diet with me and she couldn't find anything that needed to improve (Ha!) the only thing she said was I should increase my exercise from 4 x a week to 6! Holy guacamole! But, yeah, I'll definately keep the diet up, at the very least it makes me feel better about myself on the inside even if it doesn't show on the outside ... yet!

How many minutes a day were you doing? Were you incorporating strength training as well as cardio?

(I ask lots of questions don't I! lol)

If you need some motivation to get your exercise up to 6x week check out FitCysters.

Don't worry about asking questions - I don't mind at all! ask away ... maybe you can pick up on things I could improve on??

Anyway, I have to admit I don't do my weight training everytime I exercise because my arms are like little sticks of jelly ... okay ... BIG sticks of jelly ... hehehe ... so I'm trying to build them up slowly ... I've got an air climber which I do most of my exercise on, plus walking with weights strapped on for 30 minutes each time

I'll definately be checking FitCysters out ... have you got any exercise tips you could think of off the top of your head?

Thanks!

My only tip for exercise is when you feel your about to give up go one more minute. You will be running marathons in no time!!! Any luck with the Dr I suggested?

FebruaryStar, I understand your frustration with having a background that should enable you to heal yourself and yet not getting anywhere. I have trained as a nurse, naturopath and have a couple of Post Grad Diplomas in Nutrition and think I eat pretty well ... certainly 10x better than most people and yet it doesn't seem to make much of a difference. In 2003 I power walked 2hours on the beach each morning before work, walked for 1/2 hour each lunch time, then ate my lunch at my desk whilst working, THEN did 3-4 hours cardio and weights at the gym in the evening, eating disgustingly healthy foods and I too only managed to lose 1.5 kg during the whole year. It's just disgusting. All that effort and no results! Well not as many results as I'd hoped for. This was just before I was diagnosed. Anyway, what a rant ... I just wanted to let you both (Hopeful in Hamilton, February Star) know that you aren't alone. CoolPinkGurl - your herbal regimen sounds really good ... I'm going to PM you and drill for info All the best to everyone. They say that we aren't given anything that we can't cope with ... so I guess that means we are all very very strong people. Yippee!

Weight is one of the hardest things that us cysters struggle with, and I tried every diet you could imagine before seeing a herbalist/naturopath in Brisbane.

She said that my hormones were preventing me from losing weight and gave me some herbs to balance my blood sugar levels and for my hormones and got me to exercise. I actually started to lose weight and slowly but surely i got my cycle back and fell pregnant.

Her name is Katherine Thomas, shes in Woolloongabba now and I still see her for pregnancy check ups. Its worth a shot!!
