I've been on 1500 mgs of met for around 3 weeks now. I have had awful diarrhea since then. Every single time I eat, I am in the bathroom now. It is really bad.
Plus, no af and no ovulation. Nothing has changed.
How long does met take to start to work? I feel like I'm suffering needlessly.
If it's going to get me ovulating again, then I will put up with anything. But if it' s not even going to work....
I'm sorry you are having trouble! (((hugs))) I had to do quite a bit of experimenting with eating different ways before I found a method that worked for me. Some people just seem to have more sensitive tummies to the Met than others -- I am definitely one of those! I actually kept a detailed food log for several weeks, to try to figure out what caused the side effects. For me, I have to completely stay away from high fat / greasy foods (fast food, pizza) and a handful of other things (popcorn, salads). If I stay away from those things, then I have little or no side effects. Others swear by a low-sugar, no-refined-carbs diet.
Also, try taking it with food, that seems to help. You may also ask your doc for the extended release version -- that's something I am going to ask about at my next appointment. It also seems to take awhile for your body to get used to it, and for the s/e to go away.
It seems for most people that it takes a few months for the benefits to start happening -- more regular cycles, etc. so hang in there!!
Good luck with it...
Cathy

Did you start out at 1500mg? That may also be a reason for the problems. I just started met about 2 weeks ago and started at 500 and then after a week went up to 1000. Some doctors will have the patient work up to the full dosage to give the body some time to adapt. The only problem that I get is that I have sever nausia if I eat dark green veggies. It often hits me in the morning and feels like I am really hung over. I had it once after eating asparagus and once after having a salad with cucumber. I know there is a thread discussing veggies and what some people can't eat. I try to note what I ate before I got nausous so that I can work on pinpointing the no-no foods.
Hope you feel better soon,
Jen

I think you may have to give it some time, and adjust your food to work for you. Each person seems to tolerate it differently. The same goes with ovulation, I think in some women they start ovulating right away and others it takes time for it to start working. I had been taking it for about 6 or 7 months before the ovulation happened on its own. I think that if you hang in there, and let your body adjust for a while, you may start to see some changes take place.

Met is tricking. I am just now figuring out the right foods to eat and when. From what I've heard on the boards it can be quite different for each woman. For me I have to eat the so called "bad carbs" like a peice of white bread or rice when I take it. Also no juice for this cyster. I've been on it for a month and a half and I am having my first non provera induced af in years. It seemed to have taken a while for me but it is working. I hope that it works for you. And good luck on ovulating
I also think that one late night I found a thread about this on the metformin area so you might want to take a look

Sarina ~ So sorry that your having troubles with Met. It does cause alot of unwanted side effects. Like the girls said, take it with food and it should be okay. Also you've only been on it for a few weeks so you need to get your body adjusted to it. As far as AF and ovulation, every person is different, it can cause some of ovulate within weeks and some it may take months. Just gotta stick with it. The met is probably working but it may take some time for you to get AF on it. I never got AF on met and I know alot of the girls on here havent either. Good luck with it.
