My Mood: Points: 15,720.56 Bank: 29,344.06 Total Points: 45,064.63 | Hey gals I'm only on page 6 of this thread, it's great! I just bought the books (the GI Diet and Living the GI Diet) on Amazon so they should come soon.
I have been doing the Insulin Resistance diet but I've also read the Glucose Revolution book in the past and have a pretty decent understanding of the GI. One thing I wanted to address because there was a lot of concern about it in page 5-6 of this thread:
Sugars in dairy products. The 'Sugars' section of the label refers to lactose, which does not have a high glycemic index. Don't look at the sugars part of the nutrition label, but look at the ingredients. You are looking for sugar (sucrose) or high fructose corn syrup (HFCS). Fructose doesn't have a high GI so if it's added it's not as bad. I don't know if this is the way that the GI Diet works since I have not read the book yet, but that's the way the Insulin Resistance diet explains it. Hope that helps! |

My Mood: Points: 15,720.56 Bank: 29,344.06 Total Points: 45,064.63 | I ordered the books last night so they have not come yet. But I'm not sure I can do this diet. I have some questions:
1. Full-fat dairy. We actually are a small dairy operation with dairy goats, so we have all our own milk. There's not really a way for us to make skim milk. Do you think it's OK to have full-fat if I limit my amounts? I don't really have much milk anyway, maybe 1/2 cup a day in my coffee and 1/2 cup more if I have cereal.
2. Fat-free cheese: I can't do it. It tastes like rubber and it seems like 'fake' food to me. Is 2% good enough? |

One of my life's greatest pleasures is cheese! I got some of the Babybel (Laughing Cow) cheeses today. They are "light" but not fat free. We'll see how they are. I also got 2% fat Greek yogurt and cottage cheese.

What is Stevia? I don't like Splenda and I'd like to give Stevia a try. Where do you find it?
| Stevia is a natural, alternative sweetener that has no glycemic load. I have small packets (like those for Sweet n Low, Splenda, etc.) that I carry around with me. There are also drops, some that are flavored. Some people say there's an aftertaste, but I don't taste it.
I found a box of packets and the unflavored drops at my local grocery story (Kroger and HEB). If I want the flavored drops, I have to go to a health food store.
I have another earlier post on this thread about yogurt. I make my own with non-sweetened organic soy milk.

That is very exciting for me. He usually won't exercise with me, but is very supportive, and finally I have found something we can do together!! I will keep you posted on how it goes. I haven't been on a bike in years!!!

I am an IR Diet convert and the whole snack thing has me confused. I usually eat lunch around 1:00 so I go a long period of time without eating. How much is too much of a snack? I was thinking a container of unsweetened applesauce, 10 macadamia nuts, and a yogurt or something. Is this acceptable? I guess I'm just curious as to how much is too much when it comes to snacking. I'm assuming as long as it's green light it's ok?

That's not GI Diet guidelines or anything, just something I have heard. I'm still doing the IR Diet and try to have no more than 1 serving of carb in a snack, and 2 for a meal. Maybe that will help you. |

Misty - I think that if you are limiting your intake of dairy products that is better than not. And if you are making other changes to lower your glycemic load you are going to see and feel changes.
I really need to do some grocery shopping so I may go tomorrow after work. We for sure have enough to get through tomorrow.
I am officially down 11 lbs. I think part of that is just from me not feeling so well this week and the sore throat making me avoid eating... so it may bounce up a bit but I will take what I can get!!!!!

I have alot of reading to do but it seems worth it. Hope everyone is doing fine.

Also, Green Giant makes individual servings of vegetables you can take to work and steam in the microwave. They are pretty nifty-I had one today. I think each box has two servings of veggies. I had one today that was seasoned.
