My Mood: Points: 4,559.06 Bank: 0.00 Total Points: 4,559.06 | After a couple of weeks of losing and gaining the same ~1 lb. (133 - 132.2, I've finally made a break through! I guess my 45 minute dog walk just wasn't enough. I've added a 1 hr. ride on my bike trainer with great results. This morning, I finally made it down to 130.5
This is nowhere near as easy as it was even 5 yrs ago. Age really does make a difference.

If you live near a Kroger's, they have a brand that I love. It's called Carb Master. It only has 3 carbs in a cup total.

My Mood: Points: 2,054.70 Bank: 0.00 Total Points: 2,054.70 | Wow, this was a good thread....it inspired me like so many of the other ladies here.
I've been trying to follow a pseudo G.I. Diet (i.e., without any books) for the past 2 weeks, and I have to say, my stomach definitely feels better. In the weeks prior, I was having severe nausea, sharp pains whenever I ate something sweet or with bad carbs in it. It's amazing how what we put into our bodies can make us feel, huh?
As for what I've been eating, I am Indian, so eating healthier (lots of lentils, chickpeas, veggies, etc.) hasn't been too bad of a switchover. I never used to like eating Indian food more than 1x/week (especially after I got married and left my parents' place), but my health it calls for it now, and it's definitely got me on the right track. The only thing I seem to have to avoid is naan, porotta (it's this layered, flaky flatbread made with an all-purpose white/wheat mix), and white rice. Not sure about whole wheat chapathis yet, so I'm holding off on that until I speak with a dietician.
I do have a question about rice though... I've read that Uncle Ben's Parboiled (Converted) Rice is actually better than white rice, brown rice, white basmati, or brown basmati. Is this true? Does it fall into the Yellow category according to Gallop's list?
I'm also wondering if any of you got headaches when you ate sugar-free stuff? I went out last week and bought a piece of sugar-free chocolate, and used 2 packets of Splenda - it was the worst day of my life....had such a bad headache, I had to sleep for several hours.
I love this site...even though my Endo says the .com site is better and condemns message boards, I have learned a TON of useful info (that, incidentally, I passed on to my Endo!), and consider it a godsend. Yae for soulcysters.net!

I'm bengali and have been eating a lot of lentils and pulses and stuff - yes it is easy when i do it that way, and yes I miss porota and naan too!
I eat brown basmati and my sugar levels appreciate that! I also have quinoa instead of rice sometimes - it's high in protein. Low GI.
Cooks the same as rice, looks a tiny bit like couscous. Better for us.
Having said that i don't eat rice/quinoa every day ... I eat my beans/meat/fish with veggies a lot, or in soup, or combining beans and meat, beans & fish, just beans
I LOVE on chickpeas!!

My Mood: Points: 2,054.70 Bank: 0.00 Total Points: 2,054.70 | Hi Prettychickpea, it's nice to have another asian cyster around here. Does brown basmati taste very different than regular basmati? And I've heard of quinoa, but never had it. Does it taste more like rice or couscous?
I noticed that earlier this year, when I started eating more naturally to lose weight for the heck of it, I was eating lots of veggies (including Indian ones), lentils, etc., but I was still eating white rice, and I still lost a ton of weight. Maybe it's because I cut out most of my fats & sugars though. Anyway, I'm going to stay away from the white rice for sure just to protect myself.
I've lost 6 lbs. in the past two weeks, and I really want to keep going. I haven't been super strict with my sugar intake, but I'd say I cut out about 90% of my previous consumption.
Does anyone else eat the Kashi Thin Crust Roasted Vegetable pizza? It's really good, and the crust is made with whole grains, and has flaxseed and Omega-3 in it. It's a great regular pizza substitute!
Keep at it girls! You're all an encouragement to me.

Don't think we have it here
Maybe I'll make a pizza base like that ...
I used to have white basmati and veg, and tried brown a few times - now I prefer brown, it's got more bite, more nutty taste
I find if I eat white rice my sugar levels go up unless I really just have one spoon (one tablespoon - not heaped!!) whereas with brown rice I can have 4 or 5 spoons easily.
Better value for my carbs, and I stay full longer
I made khichudi (you know, lentils cooked with rice, and spices) with brown rice and it was so delicious. Better than with white rice - but took ages.
I think Quinoa tastes more like brow rice than it does of Couscous. It's more delicate than brown rice, but has a nice nutty taste to is again. It can be bland - I eat it with a lot of saucy curry - beans or meat or fish or veg. Good with tomato based stuff. I sometimes cook it in vegetable stock or in chicken stock like pullao rice.
Its nice as it takes on flavours from other foods, but it is hit and miss at first - we had a few really soggy loads of qionoa and few really undercooked servings (all went in the bin!) - now we have great quinoa because I have made it a few times.
Practice when it does not matter! Try these - http://www.101cookbooks.com/archives/001564.html http://healthycooking.suite101.com/a...a_pilaf_recipe http://www.quinoa.net/Recipes/Grain/grain.html http://allrecipes.com/Search/Recipes...ithTerm=quinoa http://www.savvyvegetarian.com/recipes/basic-quinoa.php http://vegancooking.tribe.net/thread...d-a8d1c9171896
I hope the links still work - google the sites and see if not.

It will work!
It will take time though - to get used to eating differently
If you mess up (I do, every now and then!) just have a good, balanced GI meal at the next meal. Do that every time you mess up and watch how easy it gets to not mess up!
xx
