My Mood: Points: 3,538.85 Bank: 0.00 Total Points: 3,538.85 | I started in January and haven't lost much. I didn't exercise either. I started exercising daily last week and will begin to measure the effects of the diet from that point.
I began in Jan with instructions from "The Good Carb Cookbook: Secrets of Eating Low on the Glycemic Index" by Sandra Woodruff. The meals are easy to prepare and do not require you to go to a specialty store for ingredients.
I'll keep the group informed of my progress. |

My Mood: Points: 4,377.51 Bank: 0.00 Total Points: 4,377.51 | Hello ladies - I am picking up 'the GI Diet' and 'Living the GI' - both by Rick Gallop tonight at my local library. I know I will probably end up buying both books, but since money is tight right now... this is how I am starting.
AND, I will be walking to the library and back (which will be just under 2 miles round trip).. so that counts as one days exercise.
AND... as if I have not already convinced you all to become reacquainted with your libraries, you can also find work-out videos and DVDs there to borrow. I have two Tai Chi videos (that I have not watched yet) that I just checked out on Saturday. I also saw they had a belly-dancing work out video and some hip-hop work out videos along with some more traditional work outs. I only like to work out when it is disguised at fun. I guess I need to be tricked into physical activity.
I am hoping to do a lot of reading up and get a nice grocery list together and hit the store on Thursday or friday so I can start this prepared. I am actually really excited about it. I will be keeping everyone informed.
Is anyone taking progress pictures? My hubby will be doing this with me, so I am going to mark an x in the garage where we stand weekly for pics. We are both quite large, so I am hoping we will see progress within the month on both the scale AND the pics.
HOW EXCITING... you ladies are really fueling my fire.

My Mood: Points: 4,377.51 Bank: 0.00 Total Points: 4,377.51 | I walked to the library and got my books last night. I am done with chapter one of the GI diet. I am making a point to actually read the book instead of skipping it and jumping to the diet in hopes that it will give the basis and understanding I need to continue the diet when the book is not readily available. I also got the sale ads for the 3 grocery stores near my home so I can start making my shopping list and be totally prepared to start the diet this weekend.
On a side note, the walk to the library was LOVELY, it had rained earlier so it was nice and cool and it smelled AMAZING. the path was a bit muddy... but that was no trouble. I even saw a mama duck and her 4 adorable ducklings swimming down (not so) Dry Creek next to me.

I am trying my best to change my diet to 'more' low GI (not completely, as dont have the funds or the facilities here in Greece) and its good to see that its working for lots of you. I want to do it more for the health / IR side rather than weight loss. Have I got it right that its good for that side of things, too?
Good Luck to us all! xx

I have been reading this thread for about a week now and it convinced me to purchase the GI Diet and also Living with GI diet. I just got them yesterday but haven't had time to sit down and read them yet. I am excited about getting started on this. I do have a question. Have any of you that are on it had trouble with sugar cravings and is it hard to follow the diet? I have terrible sugar cravings which makes it hard to stay on any diet. I am taking Insulite which has helped tremendously with alot of my other problems but not with the cravings (so far). If I could kick the sugar habit I would lose weight no problem. They should totally have rehab for sugar addicts! Thanks for any info/input that you may have!

My Mood: Points: 9,892.78 Bank: 0.00 Total Points: 9,892.78 | Hollyree best of luck starting the journey with us!! As for the sugar cravings, since i've been put on Met, I haven't had many. But when I do have a sugar craving, I try to eat something that doesn't have any added sugar. I'll usually have a handful of grapes, or some yogurt. And if the craving is bad, I will not lie, I have a small piece of chocolate! :-)
Keep us posted on your progress!! Best of luck!!
Rees&Dan best of luck to you as well!! Keep us posted on your progress and I hope it all goes well for you!
Best of luck to the both of you ladies! And welcome!!!

My Mood: Points: 5,394.16 Bank: 0.00 Total Points: 5,394.16 | Hello All! I have been lurking for a little bit and have finally commited to the G.I. Diet! I picked up the book yesterday and read though it. I think it is totally doable, especially since my husband is willing to do it with me. He has Type 2 Diabetes so this will significantly help him as well. We are totally taking the approach that this is a lifestyle change, not just a fad diet like has too often happened in the past.
I do have some frusterations with what Gallop says refering to the "...relatively short time span of the weight loss period in Phase I." I have more weight than the average person to lose. Like 140 pounds. No small feat. Actually to get to the optimal BMI I would need to lose 192 pounds, but would actually put me waaaaaaayyyyy too skinny. I've discussed this with my doctor and actually agreed that losing 140 pounds would put me in a really good weight for my body structure ect. But of course, this would STILL put me in the obese category!!! WTF! I'm trying to get over this thought, but it still stinks. I've been down to this weight in high school and I felt very comfortable and felt like it was "skinny enough" for me.
So anyways, did anyone else get frusterated by his remarks about how short Phase I was going to be? I mean with his suggestion of one pound a week (which I know is totally the way to do it healthy) that would be 140 weeks = over 2 1/2 YEARS! That is not a short amount of time at all.
I plan on doing this as a lifestyle, like forever, but the thought that I can't have caffeine, alcohol (I rarely drink anyways so I'm not sure why this bothers me), bananas, pinapple, Jell-O, or corn for 2 1/2 years bothers me. Ok, sorry that turned into a bit of a rant and I didn't mean it to.
So anyways, I was really encouraged by what you all had to say and I really want to be a part of your group. Any tips for a newbie G.I. Dieter would be appreciated. Thanks!!
