Question Glad but Sad

I am so glad that i found this forum. Then I started to read everyones stories. I thought my biggest scare with pregnancy was just in the first three months, but many of you have lost past that is this common in women with PCOS? I was scared before about conceiving again but now i am petrified. Lisa

Lisa,

Most pregnancy losses occur in the first 3 months. After a heartbeat has been detected, the chances of loss decrease dramatically. Please use that fact to console yourself.

From what I've read, even with PCOS, most losses that are due to hormonal and chromosonal causes occur in the first trimester. Losses due to other factors (infections, pre-term labor, "incompetent cervix", etc.) seem to be more common in the 2nd trimester and sometimes the third.

With that being said, statistics never seem "small" when they happen to you. (For example, I lost a baby after seeing a heartbeat on ultrasound in summer 2004.) The gals on this thread each have had a unique experience and some of the losses occured later than others. We all grieve for each other and hold each other up as best as we can.

Lisa, I wish I could put your mind at ease. If you have PCOS, your risk of M/C is higher. I think that, sometimes, blood disorders can be linked to PCOS (there are a lot of them here, at least). I KNOW that low progesterone can cause M/C. You should have your progesterone checked at your first OB appointment. If it's low, you can supplement it.

In the third trimester, women with PCOS are more likely to experience preterm labor. There's a sticky in the pregnancy forum that lists all of the warning signs. If you know them, and get help when you first think something's wrong, you stand a good chance of continuing your pregnancy.

There is no official link between PCOS and incompetent cervix. But a lot of women here have dealt with incompetent cervix. Again, memorize the warning signs (same sticky as above). Follow your instincts when they're warning you, and see the doc, even if you think you're being silly. This could save your baby. Additionally, ask your OB if they'd be willing to do a few cervical U/S for you to ease your mind. One around 13 weeks will give a good baseline. After that, if an U/S shows shortening or funneling, you can have a cerclage put in that could save your baby's life. Unfortunately, once you've dilated, your baby's chances of survival go down. Not that it's impossible - but the odds stack even more highly against you.

My best advice is to read up on all of the above and find a doctor who will test/examine to ease your fears. Follow your instincts above all else - they may be your only warning that something's wrong.

lisa, worrying is what mothers do, so don't pay attention to that advice. if you have had a loss, pregnancy is terrifying. in my opinion, it helps a lot to have a doctor you feel very confident with. even then, there is worry. and reading the stories of others can be therapeutic but it puts a lot of other things into your head to worry about. ((hug)) sorry about that. specifically to answer your question, later losses are extremely rare. several of us just ended up on the wrong end of the statistics. many cysters carry to term without any trouble, even after a m/c.

Welcome to our little corner of the world.

Lisa - I'm also one of the statistics that saw a heartbeat and then had a 1st trimester m/c. I am pretty scared to get pg again too. I am trying to educate myself as much as I can about the different causes for m/c and how to avoid them (for those that can be avoided), and though I do worry about a future m/c, I somehow feel better knowing more too. I hope you will be able to conceive again at the right time for you, and that you will have a healthy pg when you do.
