Hello!
I'm wondering how a home glucometer reading compares with a GTT result. In July 2002, I did a 5 hour GTT and was diagnosed with hyperinsulinemia and border-line diabetes. I take 500 mg of Glucophage daily.
For years I've had gum disease problems and have had a flare up, my dentist said he can tell by my gums my health is poor and sent me to the periodontist (my appointment with him was yesterday), he said the same thing as my dentist and asked me if I was checking my glucose levels - as my gums are indicative of diabetics with uncontrolled blood sugar!! I have not been checking my levels at home, as I wasn't officially dx with diabetes. So I came home and checked my levels: 2 hours after eating they were 118 (normal range), 2 hours after that (before a next meal) they were 91 (again, a normal range) but this morning, my fasting levels were 115. Now my question: I realize that a fasting level above 110, is impaired glucose, but is this number range the same with a glucometer as with GTT? Does excess insulin have the same damaging affects on the body that excess glucose (like my gum disease issues)?
I go back to my endo next month, I'm going to have him do another GTT with insulin and also check my hormone levels for officialy get a diagnosis on PCOS and/or to see if I'm perimenopausal. Even with medication, things aren't getting better and seem to be getting worse. My BP yesterday was 150/100.

I'm not sure about that one........I think there are still dangers of having excess insulin.....thats why we need an insulin sensitizer...or Glucophage.
GTT is a fasting tolerance test where blood is taken every half hour on the hour for two hours....I believe its alot more accurate than most home machines...if you haven't had this done, I would definately request it......sounds like you may be diabetic...but I'm not sure with those levels.......It doesn't look like the others have been around, but Oana and DianaG are quite knowledgeable and may be able to help you!

Thanks for the reply! I had a 5 hour GTT with insulin done last July. It showed I was border-line diabetic and insulin resistance/hyperinsulinemia. I know diabetics check their levels all the time, so it may be a non-issue for most, but since I was border-line before, and have noticed a change in my readings, in this instance, a few points off can make a difference. KWIM? I go back to my endo in February, I'm sure he'll retest me to see how the Glucophage is working.

I saw your website and love it!! I'm trying to figure out how to make one myself...but everytime I've tried, its seemed so hard....either too small for everything including pics...or too big where It became too complicated!!
We are Christians........I was born again almost 3 years ago, so I'm still searching for Gods direction and meaning like you did. With PCOS, I have diabetes, hypothyroid, and we're having a time ttc.......I put off ttc to work on the vessel that God gave me. I thought that it would be easier to prepare myself and get healthier and just let God work as he has already. We took a job in Ohio and moved from NYS to a state we didn't know anyone...we felt led to take a job as fosterparents to teenage girls....and while its been extremely challenging, Everything has worked out!
I haven't gotten through your whole site, I'm planning on going back as there is so much....but God bless you for your testimony! Your site blessed DH and I!

The glucose results should be comparable, assuming you eat the same thing and test at the same intervals. So, if you drink a sweet drink with the same sugar content as at the test, your home glucometer should reveal the same blood sugar issues.
Good luck,
Oana

Hi Traci: Oana is right. The machine and the GTT should be very close to one another as long as you eat the same amount of glucose. My husband used to work in a lab and some pregnant women couldn't handle the glucose drink; instead, to equal the amount of glucose given in the 3 hour gtt they would have them drink a 12oz regular coke and eat a snickers bar (within the same 5minute time limit) and then would test them at the 1 hour 2 hour and 3 hour intervals.
I have diabetes and had developed periodontal disease and it was told to me that it was from high glucose levels not insulin levels. HTH
