Default Glucophage AND Insulin?

I recently got pregnant and was taken off of Glucophage and put on Insulin for the pregnancy. Well, my HCG numbers dropped this week and I should be miscarrying at any time now.

I assumed that the doctor would have me stop Insulin and go back to Glucophage, but he actually wants me to go back on 1500 MGS of Glucophage AND remain on insulin. Have you ever heard anything like that? My A1c was 6.0 last week so it isn't like my blood sugar is hugely high. He just thinks I should be on the glucophage for my PCOS, and the insulin to get my blood sugar under very tight control.

This doctor is my OB so I am wondering if there is any reason I SHOULDN'T do both or if I should put in a call to my Endocronoligst to check with them?

Kathy

Hi Kathy. I'm sorry to hear about your mc. Not sure why the dr's did this, but I too was on 500mg of Glucophage xr, actos and lantus insulin at night and novulin n in the morning. Now that we are DEFINITELY ttc, my dr has taken me off of gluc and actos and now I am on stictly insulin. My A1C is 6.3. I would just call the dr on Monday and ask why you are on both. Good luck to you.

Kathy, I am so sorry to hear about your m/c.

I think it is strange to keep you on the insulin now that you are no longer pg. When I was pg I too went from 1500mg of gluc a day to insulin for tight control. After my m/c I never asked anyone I just went back to my glucaphage. My pcp told me later on that it was okay to do so. My A1C is 5.1. I don't think 6.0 is that out of control. It may not be what a dr wants to see but your blood sugar levels may just be high right now because you may still have hormones floating around from being pg. I would get a second opinion if I were you. JMHO
