I had this exact same problem the first time I started taking glucophage. I didn't know it, but I was mildly hypoglycemic before starting gluc and I actually ended up in the ER! (I was taking 500mg regular) I had no idea what was happening until I told the doctors at the hospital I was on metformin and they took my blood sugar. I was scared to take it after that and stopped. That was a year ago, and I since decided to give it another try. I've been on it now for about a month and a half at 1000 mg. I have had no problems with hypoglycemia, not even once. I found out the secret to taking it for me. I've found that I cannot low carb on glucophage. I just eat a balnced diet. I never eat refined sugar or anything bad, but I have a healthy amount of carbs. If I don't eat enough carbs, I will have trouble. When I wasn't taking gluc, it was just the opposite. I had to stay away from carbs and sugar. You will find that with the glucophage, it takes care of the carbs for you. Therefore, if you are planning on staying on it, I would not stay on the Zone diet if you are experiencing hypoglycemia on met. I would still follow it to some degree, but don't limit your carbs too much.
I am doing well on the glucophage. The trick for me is to eat. I feel great, even when I have carbs. Just stay away from refined sugar. Instead of white potatoes, have red, instead of white bread, have wheat or rye, no white rice, only brown, etc. Have enough carbs, just be careful which kind. It may be that your body just needs to acclimate itself to the met and you can low carb later.
