Default Glucophage is making me feel sick

I started to take the glucophage and of course got the diarrehea but then I noticed I was feeling nauseated and icky. I forgot to take my medicine the other night before bed, I woke up feeling great. I took my levoxyl then ate an hour later and took the glucophage and started feeling nasty again. I called the pharmacist and they put me on the generic form of glucophage and it is working much better!!!

I really hope this is going to work this time!!!

I am glad the metformin is not making you sick like the glucophage was. I have not tried the met, I am on the glucophage XR and was told there is no generic for it yet.

I replied to your other post and asked if you were on glucophage before I saw this post! Sorry!

Good Luck!

Hi Diane,

What's the difference between glucophage and glucophage XR?

Hi.

I have no idea if this is correct, but this is how I understand it. Glucophage XR is a newer version of glucophage that is time released. Basically since the patent was up for glucophage and the company still wanted to make money now that a generic is on the market they changed the formula just a little and renamed it to get another - what is it 20 year, or 10 year- patent on the medicine.

I am not sure how much it was changed chemically for it to get a new patent, but it is basically the same as regular gluc. Although I have heard less patients get the severe GI probs with the XR and that could be because it doesn't all hit your system at once.

Who knows?

This is just my opinion and thoughts on the topic; I have no scientific basis for this. Although I did see a 20/20 on drug companies creating XR versions of meds like Paxil etc... to extend the patents and keep a patient base from switching to generic.

Best Wishes,
Diana

I take the Metformin 500mg 3x a day, I have learned to not take it with milk. Milk will make you have an upset stomach..

I'm noticing that when I take the Met. I'm still feeling bad. Yesterday was a terrible day for me. Today I took my meds later and felt great but the last hour am feeling icky again.

I'm wondering if it's because I take the Met and Red yeast rice at the same time? I'll have to try it out and see how it goes, otherwise I'll have to call the Dr.

Are there any other meds that help with the blood sugar?
