Hello. I'm new here and I'm still learning the basics. I was diagnosed with pcos in 1996. The Dr. put me on bcp. We decided that we were going to ttc so I stopped the pill and became preg. That was in 1999, I lost the preg at around 8 1/2 weeks. I reciently started going to a specialist and he put me on glucophage xr 500. My question is-- Does anyone know if the extended release is as effective as the reg?
Thank You.
As far as this forum's ladies are concerned, the jury is still out on XR vs Reg Gluc. Some ladies do better on XR because they have less side effects and get better absorption of the drug. Others say regular was most effective for them. Here in Canada, only regular Met is available so that's all I've taken, but I'm sure women will be able to tell you their experiences to help you decide.
All the best!

I took 2000mg XR, and it wasn't effective at all. I see a HUGE difference in the regular met 2000mg. I'm losing weight much easier than on the XR, and my hormones seem to be regulating a bit as well.
The one thing the XR did do for me... eliminated the GI side effects that you'd normally get with the regular stuff.
I tried met several years ago.. and had to go off because of the nasty side effects. XR didn't do that to me, and when I switched I had NO side effects at all.

I just wanted to wish you luck. I love my regular metformin and heard an endo describe that the xr sometimes doesn't stay in the body long enough to get all of the medicine out of the medium that it's in, so it could be delivering less than the regular tablets.

Sheri - Hmm. I kind of doubt that ("xr sometimes doesn't stay in the body long enough to get all of the medicine out of the medium that it's in", etc.). It's a diabetes medication and I can't see it being available for it unless it delivered the promised dosage of medication. I really don't think they'd play with peoples' blood sugar like that (or that the FDA would have approved it). And if it was delivering less, I would think that the maximum dosage would be as high (or higher) as regular, but it's not; max dosage is only 2000mg whereas regular is 2550mg. To me, it seems like a more level dose. I'm not having highs and lows like I was having on regular. JMO
I also lost more weight easier on regular. However, I believe most of it was because of all the running to the bathroom I did because of GI effects. :o
I know everyone has their own favorite. I love XR, it's done wonders for me. Maybe not as fast as regular, but not as harshly either.

My dr asked me to do some research for him. He had heard XR wasn't as effective for weight loss. So, I'm getting ready to start a thread, "Glucophage or XR, which do you prefer?"
If you could, please look for it and respond. I'd like to give him as much information as possible.
Thanks,
Tina

I'm gonna stop looking back and starting moving on
And learn how to face my fears
Love with all of my heart, make my mark
I wanna leave something here

That's what I'm gonna be about
Yeah, I wanna be running
