I was on Met (regular) at 2250mg daily and then switched to 1500mg GlucXR 3 months later because of intolerable side effects (persistent nausea was not something I wanted to experience unless pg, KWIM?). I am a semi-thin cyster (about 15lbs over my ideal weight). I was diagnosed as "borderline insulin resistant," and I can tell you that my doctor was very proactive in treating me because most doctors would not have felt that my fasting insulin was elevated enough to warrant medical treatment. However, given my age and weight (at the time, only about 25lbs over my ideal weight) he felt it was necessary to start treating me to prevent future problems.
I decided when starting Met that I would give it 6 months and then move on to fertility treatment. This was really a sort of random time frame, but one that made sense to Kiko and me given we'd already been trying for over a year and wanted to see if my body would behave itself or not. I had evidence of Oing each cycle (bbt charting) between cd 29-39, except for the cycle I got pg, when I O'd on cd 42, I think. September came, and I went in for my fertility treatment consult & got a prescription for clomid. The day of my consult, I had a bfn, so I started prometrium, and apparently I O'd while taking it! Anyway, before even starting clomid, I got an unexpected, but very much desired, bfp! Things seem to be going very well so far with this bub.
For some women, it will take a lot longer for Met to work, so it really depends on how your body responds, and how quickly you want to move on to ART. Good luck! I hope it does the trick for you.
