if my blood glucose levels are within the normal range and i still have IR symptoms - which tells me my insulin is high. what does this mean? are blood glucose levels unrelated to insulin levels?
My blood sugar (is that the same as blood glucose?) ALWAYS test within the normal range, but i've been dx with IR for a couple of years now.
As far as I u/stand it, your blood sugar only goes up permantly once your body has totally lost the function to take up the excess insulin and shuts down the insulin production. Then the sugar just rises and rises and rises. If your IR but don't have elevated blood sugar, it means that while you produce too much insulin, your body can still take up some of the insulin.
Hope that made sense!

thank you for the info libchick, that does make sense. it's sort of upsetting. since starting metformin, my blood glucose levels have improved quite abit, but i still have just as much acne and other IR symtoms (ance being the most obvious and out of control). that might sound shallow but i haven't had normal skin for about 10 years now, i was hoping met would help in that area.

It doesn't sound shallow at all! I had problems with acne since puberty struck with a vengence and I HATED how I looked and there was even a time that I refused to go anywhere except my varsity classes. I just thought everybody would look at me and go
I was on Roacutain for about 2 years, and while my acne did improve marginally the side-effects especially the sensitivity to the sun really bothered me. I live in South Africa and there's just no escaping the sun! Plus it was REALLY $$$, almost R900 per month which my mom gratefully paid for me.
My endo prescribed an anti-androgen (Androcur, which is the same as Spiro in the USA) this year and I have to say I LOVE it!! It costs significantly less (R98 per month), there's no sun sensitivity or dry skin and I only have to take it for 10 days a months and not every single day. Everybody are also commenting on how great my skin looks these days - of course i'll always have the acne scars, but i haven't had a breakout since Feb.
Because it supresses your testosterone, I also have less problems with the excess facial hair, and hair loss and my hormones are now 100% normal for the first time in 6 years!
Have you chatted to your GP/endo about taking an anti-androgen? It's really done wonders for me!

My glucose levels are in the normal range....However, my Insulin level is way off the chart.
The high insulin level is what makes people Insulin Resistant.
I too have acne...It gets really close to clearing & then flares up again. Mine is around my chin/jaw area.
I started Met 500mg about 6 days ago....
I've read that the dose of Met may need to be increased if symptoms still persist.
i've also been on and off accutane. and i've had the same issues, cracked, dry lips, nose bleeds, sun sensitivity. and it comes back within a month of coming off of it. and it is very expensive. it's sort of tease... you get go see how beautifull your skin can actually be, but it's only temporary.
i was told by my doctor that because i'm diabetic, my insulin should be the main concern. i can go on other things to lower the testosterone, but once my insulin is when it needs to be, the testosterone will in turn be lowered. so clearly i do need a higher dose of met, since i still have the symptoms of high insulin. i also know it's high form the bloodwork. i've read that taking off about 5-10% off body your body weight can make a huge difference in lowering insulin levels. i know i really need to drop about 20lbs and that will really lower it. it's so hard for me to stay disciplined and get that weight off!
