Question glucose monitoring and fasting...?

i don't know if this is the right place for this since i don't have (or know if i have) diabetes. i bought a glucose monitor and i wanted to check my blood sugar since i don't have med insurance. i really don't know when i should check or if i should fast first before the i use it the first time or even what the numbers should be...any help would be greatly appreciated!

I was recently diagnosed with diabetes. My doctor has me checking my levels once a day, 2 hours after my meal. However, I have been checking it twice a day just to see if any changes. Normal levels should be, I think, below 120 or 140. It its over 140 but not yet 200, I think they consider that pre-diabetes. Anything over 200 is considered diabetic. I haven't had a fasting glucose check yet, don't think my doctor is ordering one. My levels have been ranging from 250 to 350 so I definitely have to get it under control.

HTH

If you are using a glucose monitor the number ranges are:
fasting glucose(first thing in the morning before you have eaten or drinking anything):80-105 and 2 hours after a meal(from first bite): 80-140.
My doc has me testing twice a day. First thing when I wake up and two hours after a meal, any meal I choose. HTH!

I am also uninsured and went to the doctors for a fasting glucose blood test and was diagnosed with diabetes. I go to a clinic with a sliding fee scale. Check out your area there may be a clinic like that near you. Good luck!

hoping_n_wishing, if your numbers are running 250-350, you should be on insulin and need to tell your doctor ASAP! Diabetes is over 126 and needs to be treated. My guidelines are under 125 first thing in the morning and under 150 2 hours after eating. I've started a new RA drug and my fasting sugars are running in the 170's. Doubling the diabetes medication has helped but not enough. I may add another metformin pill tonight and see what happens. Right now I'm on Janumet 50/500 twice a day.

Lil_Annie: I was diagnosed about 2 weeks ago. My doctor wants to try diet and exercise first before putting me on insulin. She has also put me on 1000mg of Metformin XR and 45mg of Actos. Right now I am only taking 500mg of Met and it seems to be bringing it down.
