So, for example, you eat your eggo in the morning and then decide you want a milkshake at 10am, can you body process the extra sugar properly?
I have failed all my 1 hr ones, they make the #'s extra stringent for it so they can filter out possible GD. Then the 3 hr one (which IS fasting), is a more accurate predictor of definete GD. Good luck!

What is the glucose tolerance test like?
For three days before the test, you'll be told to eat at least 150 grams of carbohydrate a day. If you eat a normal diet and have an extra piece of bread at each meal, you'll likely be getting enough carbs. For eight to 14 hours before the test, you can't eat or drink anything but sips of water (and you're not supposed to smoke or exercise either), so you'll want to schedule it for first thing in the morning.
When you arrive for the test, the technician will take a blood sample to measure your "fasting blood glucose level" and then ask you to drink either a more concentrated dose or a larger volume of the glucose solution. Then brace yourself for three more arm pricks, as your blood is tested every hour for the next three hours. The technician should alternate arms each time she draws your blood.
You'll definitely need something to distract you this time, because you'll have to stay seated in the waiting room between blood drawings. And bring something to eat right after your final blood sample is drawn because you'll probably be starving.
If one of the readings is abnormal, you may have to take another test later in your pregnancy. Or your practitioner may ask you to make some changes in your diet and exercise routine. If two or more of your readings are abnormal, you'll be diagnosed with gestational diabetes and you'll need to talk to your practitioner about a treatment plan. This chart shows the levels that the American Diabetes Association considers abnormal at each interval of the test:

My Mood: Points: 250.84 Bank: 0.00 Total Points: 250.84 | it must be different with different doctors. I spcifically called my doc this morning and asked if the 1 hour initial screen was fasting and they said no, they just don't want me eating any sugar that morning (they mentioned donuts, etc.)
Also, I was never told to do any specific diet (carb consumption) prior to the test. Actually, when my dr scheduled the test a couple of weeks ago, I asked him how i could pass it. he told me not to eat carbs the day before - which totally negates the whole carb consumption diet prior to.
I go for my first screen tomorrow morning, not sure what I'll eat. Was thinking breakfast burrito... Tried to eat mostly salad today, but did have a small slice of apple cobbler (ok, ok with vanilla ice cream and caramel sauce) and then lasagna/spaghetti for dinner. I'm trying to stave off a craving for a nice bowl of corn pops tho...
I was told with my first pregnancy that i was GUARANTEED GD, but never developed it. can't remember if i had to do the 3-hour or not, but in the end was negative anyway.
this time, however, i'm 20 pounds heavier. I know this still doesn't guarantee I'll have/develop it, but it does make me more nervous. They had me on januvia until i was 16wks/gest, but have been off everything since. I'm also supposed to monitor my BS regularly, but that doesnt happen either.
good luck to everyone on the glucose screen, for me its a nerve-wracking annoyance, mandatory, but annoying. To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 10 or greater. You currently have 0 posts. |

Points: 5,077.73 Bank: 0.00 Total Points: 5,077.73 | i failed my 1 hour with DD but passed my 3 hour. for this baby, i made sure that i didn't eat sugary stuff that day. so all i had at breakfast was a bowl of cheerios with milk and a banana (which i later found out bananas are apparently high in sugar). i was gonna have another glass of milk but saw that 1 cup has 9grams of sugar in it so decided against it. i am very happy to say that i passed the test and didn't have to go through the 3 hour one.
Good luck!

So that would be a big no no on the eggos.. try a pc of whole wheat or multi grain toast with butter, absolutely NO milk or dairy, eggs, breakfast meat, etc..
Milk and bananas are on the big no no list for GD mommies in the AM.. I was allowed to have milk in the afternoon but never bananas

I have to have these even not preggo.. so been there done that a million times LOL! The one hour they want a look at how your body is "normally" functioning.. so they say don't eat a carb loaded meal before the test but to eat normally.. the three hour is to examine further how your entire insulin and glucose system is working..
And yes! you are eating for 1 not two! that is an old wives tale and your OB should have told you that you only need a few more calories than normal while pregnant.. I think the most you need is 300 extra calories in the third trimester. Baby will always get what baby needs, you will just become more and more drained is all!

Just try not to eat extra sugar and you'll be fine...like if you drink a glass of juice I'd have water or milk and instead of the eggo I'd have toast or cereal.
I wouldn't try to cheat my way to pass by not eating...I'd rather know my sugars ok!
Good luck!
