Default Glucose Tolerance Test

I have to have this test done and just wondered what it's like. Is it pills you take, or something you drink? If it's something you drink, how icky is it really? Not looking forward to this one...

Hello, I just had one on Mon. You can't eat anything for 12 hours! What I did was, I had to do a urine test, so make sure you don't do anything before you get to the lab. My sister said she didn't have a urine test, but every place is different. Make sure you don't drink any water also! After the test they draw the blood as your "fasting" test. Then you drink "Glucola". Mine was a fruit punch. It wasn't bad at all. It was pretty sweet. You are given 3 minutes to drink it all, it's about the size of a can of soda. Then you sit for 30 min. they draw your blood again "30 min. test", then you sit for 30 mins. again, they draw your blood "1 hour blood test. You sit for an hour this time "2 hour blood test", sit for another hour "3 hour blood test". During this time you are not allowed to drink water at all. You might want to, but this will ruin the test. Oh and the "drink" might make you feel light headed. If you have any questions let me know. I hope that helps.

My script says 75gm glucola

2 hrs post - glucose level

2 hrs post - insulin level

My RE said that I can go home, then go back after 2 hrs for the blood test. She didn't say a thing about urine test. She knows that I have a problem w/ peeing for pee tests. I just freeze up. Anyway, I'm not having the test at the RE office. It will be at the lab. Do you think they will give me any problems?

No, I don't think they will give you a problem. When the tech. told me that I would have to pee...I had just went! So I knew I was going to have a little bit of a problem. My sister told me, she didn't need to do that. I guess it depends on the Lab you go to. I went to LabCorp. When I was getting my blood drawn, before I sat for an hour, the tech. told me I could go home then come back in an hour, but it would only be for an hour at a time. They take your blood 5x when you are there:
*Fasting Blood Test
*1/2 hr. test
*1hr. test
*2 hr. test
*3 hr. test
I don't think you can leave for 2 hrs. they need to test it every hour. I could of been a different case. Monday was the first time I have ever had it done. So there could be something different that I don't know about. I hope that helps.

I just want to add something the docs often forget to tell us: it's important to eat a "normal" amount of carbs (at least 250 grams) for 3 days prior to the test, otherwise the results can be skewed. Just thought I'd mention that in case you are eating low carb.

I took that test in December and I remember..that it made me nauseas and I felt like I was going to pass out and I felt like I was going to start bawling like a baby.

What made it do that to me?

It was weird. I got really light headed, I felt sort of tried. I really couldn't focus. When I went to get my blood tested, the tech. said I could go walk around if I wanted to. I looked at him and said I didn't feel like doing anything. I told him that I felted bad. I didn't throw up. I just felt really nauseas. He said it was because of the sugar in the drink.

Constance,
That's what I am thinking too. I think I have Hypoglycemia instead of Diabetes. Is that a sign of IR?

I slept thru most of mine... It was done in an exam room.... in a recliner with a "hep lock" in my endocrinologists office. My blood work was done, the drink, then half an hour later, an hour (after the drink), two hours, then the third hour. But because my levels were still going up at the second hour, they extended mine to the 4th hour. YUCK. But I slept so I didn't realize. I still went up the third hour, and had levelled off the 4th. Yup I'm diabetic. Type two. The nurse that did my test was a doll.... we stay in touch.

Take care, and good luck
