Default Glucose Tolerance Test & severe shaking

Howdy!

I just went in for my OGTT this morning and things were nondescript until I got home... about 2 1/2 hours after I drank the glucose solution I started shaking severely. I had stopped on the way home to grab some lunch and could hardly hold on to the spoon to get the soup to my mouth. I still didn't feel better after eating, so i drank some sugared soda left over from a party, and that stopped the shaking, but I still feel crummy... has anyone else had this experience or know a term I could google to find out what happened?

Thanks!
'Chelle

Hypoglycemia = Insulin Resistance

The shakes are caused by hypoglycemia. You dont tell us what your GTT results are?? but shaky hands are a sure sign of IR. I get it if I havent eaten for a while and start fumbling when trying to find something to eat and still shaky until 10-15mins after eating.

The shaking is not just in your hands either, if you stretch your tongue out as far as it will go when you have these episodes, the tongue wont be able to stay straight. Random shakes freak me out and makes me think I got Parkinsons or something??

Sounds like hypoglycemia. It will be interesting to hear about your GTT results. Maybe you are IR. Your insulin went really high to process the excess glucose and then it dropped your glucose too low.

I haven't seen my test results yet, but Doc did respond to my question about my shaky experience and he said "This may be from an exaggerated, delayed surge of insulin in response to the glucose load and a subsequent drop in the glucose level in your blood. If it is not recurring I would not worry about it."

I'm still fuzzy on the definitions of everything... but isn't that IR? Your body is "resistant" to the insulin, you have to pump out more, and then wammo, your glucose is controlled, or over controlled? I don't normally have that drastic of a reaction, but around 2-3 hours after a meal I start getting hungry, fuzzy head, sleepy, and off & on irritated/impatient.

My Doc, who is great, was out last week for a well deserved vacation, so I don't want to bombard him with emails and questions when he is trying to catch up and become an obnoxious patient. My lab results haven't been posted online yet, but if not by end of the day, I'll call the nurse and ask some questions...

Well, the response from my Doc is ..."No this is not insulin resistance in which there is imparied function of the insulin and the glucose levels start to rise abnormally. This is more likely a normal variation in how much the glucose level drops. Try avoiding heavy meals and try for smaller more frequent meals with complex carbohydrates and protein and avoiding simple carbohydrates. The GTT was normal."

I guess I should be happy that I'm not IR, but now I feel really empty/desperate for some sort of physical confirmation that feeling crappy all the time is not in my head. How else am I suppose to explain to myself why I am exhausted all the time, can't loose weight, hairy, smelly, yada yada... and now how do I know which diet to follow? I can't believe how this feels like such an emotional punch in the stomach to find out I am *normal/healthy*

OMGosh I hate how do do that. You could still be very much IR. The diet you have to follow is the Low GI diet. Has worked wonders for my symptoms of IR. I been through the same thing I had blood checked alot and GTT and was found to be 'normal' HOWEVER.. I wasnt, some labs have different ranges of 'normal' arrrgh makes me mad

Thanks for the feedback! I was at the book store today looking at IR books and saw a graph of blood sugar rise and fall and it is EXACTLY what I have found to happen to me when I test my blood at home... my numbers are still *normal* but I have a high spike and then a low fall instead of a gentle rise and fall...

Well, I decided after much crying and fussing to DH that I am not going to let ONE man tell me I am wrong when I know darn well that is what is going on... I DON'T need his confirmation to treat as if IR. I'm trying to find a diet book that *clicks*... is the Zone diet good for IR with the 30% protein, 40% carb, 30% fat ratio? Do IR diets have a different ratio of % of daily calories from protein, carb, fat?

I'm thinking that my perfectionist tendancies get in the way when I am looking for the *right* answer... and the answer is really that we are all different and need different things to get to feeling better...

oh... another question... when you do low GI diet... do you just make sure to eat low GI foods or do you count calories and other numbers too?
