i didn't know of it when we adopted our first baby, i tried to induce lactation, with only a breast pump, but i wasnt able to do it, due to alot of factors.
I think it can take almost a year to induce lactation for adoptive mommies, so you almost need to start as soon as you decide to adopt.
I got preg with #2, and needed help with my milk supply, and i read about Goats Rue, and wished i had known of it sooner for #1, but perhaps it can help someone else.

I'm really interested in this... I've been debating if I want to breast feed. I'm curious if either of you have any more information about it? I'm wondering how other would react. It really doesnt matter, but everybody knows we are adopting and if some people would think I'm absolutely crazy!
I've checked with La Leche League and read a lot of stories online of adoptive mothers breastfeeding.
It seems that most women have to supplement with formula as it is very hard to get a full milk supply especially if you've never given birth. I have read that some women have though and a lot of women bf with the Supplemental Nursing System. It a system that you put on and the milk is in a tube or bottle (I haven't seen one just read about it) that goes between your breasts and a very small tube comes out that you can tape to your breast at the nipple and the baby sucks the breast and tube at the same time. Some women like to use the SNS so they can bond with their baby, even if they're not lactating.
There are several different herbs and teas that you can use to help promote lactation.
I just searched adoptive breast feeding on the internet and a lot of stuff came up!
Hope that helps.
P.S. I know what you mean about wondering what people will think!
