Default Going from Prozac to Celexa

I've been on 20 mg of Prozac for about a year now, but due to hard times I haven't been able to afford my refills. My mom has about 3 months worth of Celexa (she doesn't take it anymore), so I'm wondering if Celexa would be a suitable replacement right away. I know you're supposed to taper off of these drugs, but I just don't have the means to do it. Has anybody switched medications in this manner with good results? Does Celexa work well in general?

Also I'm wondering about weight gain. If I didn't gain weight on Prozac, does that mean I won't gain weight on Celexa? I know they're in the same family of medications. That's the main thing I'm worried about.

Celexa is quite a step down from Prozac. It works great for some people and not at all for others. Have you ever taken it before? I don't know about weight gain on it. I didn't gain anything on it, but I only took it for about 6 weeks. If you do decide to take it, I would start by alternating days with it and what you have left of Prozac. That should lessen the effects of withdrawal from it. You do not want to get withdrawal's from an antidepressant. It is horrible!!

I've never switched meds but I've been on Celexa for 7 years and I think it's a great drug. I try not to take a large dose - usually only about 5mg a day - but if I'm really stressed or something in life is making me unhappy, I just raise it to 10mg a day and I feel much better after a week or two.

prozac withdrawal has some nasty s/e and its not something you should just quit...unless going up on ad's rather than down in potency
i was on prozac for about 5 years. swaped it for effexor xr...but that killed AF so have now come off of them altogether. still very depressed at times but losing AF is scary and super depressing in itself. they are already irregular enough, and i'd rather fly solo without meds than lose any chance i have of ttc .
be careful what ever you do. maybe try talking to a dr at justanswer.com
i always find theyre helpful

Hello..

I take celexa and all I can tell you is my experience with it. I started with 20 mg and had to go up to 40. The only side effect I had on it was dry mouth and sweating which who knows if that is actually from that or my diabetes.

I don't know about taking it instead of your prozac, maybe there is a nurse line or something you could call.

Best of luck to you.

Ive been on Celexa for 2 weeks now and am not really happy with it yet. My side effects so far are sleepiness (12-14 hrs a day) lack of sex drive and it has made orgasims almost impossible to have. I no longer sit and dwell over things like I used to so thats a plus but if these side effects do not go away I think I am going back to the doc to see if something else would suit me better. I went from Lexapro straight to Celexa and I have to admit I think I like the lexapro better but the Celexa is cheeper at $4 a month at wal-mart. Hope this helps
