Actually my endo is the one who felt it, my PCP, ob/gyn both missed, he said the thyroid is supposed to move when you swallow and he asked me to swallow while he had his hand over the thyroid and that is when he said it was slightly enlarged.

How to Check Your Neck for Early Detection of Thyroid Disease
Step-By-Step
From Mary Shomon
Millions of Americans have undiagnosed thyroid problems. To help with early detection, you can perform a simple self-exam. Checking your neck can in some cases help you find lumps or enlargements in the neck that may point to thyroid conditions, including nodules, goiter and thyroid cancer. Here is how to do a thyroid neck check.
Stand in front of a mirror, so that you can see your neck without any obstruction. Take off scarves, neckties, turtlenecks, so your view of your neck area is clear.
Stretch your neck back, chin toward the ceiling.
With your neck still stretched back, drink a glass of water.
Check your neck, looking for any enlargement in the thyroid area.
Feel the area around the thyroid to see if you can detect any enlargement, bumps or lumps.
If you can detect any sort of problem, feel any enlargement or lump, you should see a doctor for evaluation right away.

I have a goiter. IF you turn your head to the side and put your hand on your neck and swallow you should be able to feel it.
Typical thyroid gland size should be the size of your first nuckle on your thumb (the one with the thumbnail). Any larger than that is typically enlarged.
If you start having choking sensations for no reason, have it checked out. The thyroid gland is connected across your trachea area by the isthmus (sp?? - if anyone can't tell by now I am a horrid speller and a worse typer). Once they start enlarging, it puts pressure on there and hence the choking sensations.
My thyroid is so large it literally stretches from one side of my neck below the ear to the other side. It is about 3.5 times enlarged or larger. And still not working right.
I had a multinodular goiter for a couple years, and then I let a doctor rush me into RAI therapy, where you take a radioactive pill to destroy the thyroid. I can honestly say that was the biggest mistake of my life. I have gained over 60 pounds from the loss of my thyroid, and have lost all quality of life. I used to think my PCOS was bad, but wow, did this ever take over! If your doc recommends RAI, I strongly suggest lots of research and a second opinion first!
Good luck with your goiter. However you decide to treat it, I hope it turns out much better for you than it did for me.

(Whew, that sure was one depressing first post...!)
omg junebugtn that is awful... sorry you had to go through that (((HUGS))
I just got diagnosed with lymphocytic thyroiditis (sp?) today and I am trying to gather it all in but the doc said that is what is causing the goiter so now I am trying to research as much as I can about this disease, I can't win ... what next??

Twilite - i hear ya! Pcos and Thyroiditis sucks. But you live and learn and adapt and each day becomes better somehow.
Pebbles - it is possible to be normal on thyroid and have a goiter. your gland enlarges when your body needs more. the increase in size allowed for sufficient additional production for your body. now- does that really mean things are ok in there - in my opinoin no. beacuse if things were ok it wouldn't be growing to reach a point of being ok.
watch for how it makes you feel. do you sleep a lot or a little? are you chocking? how is the hair situation? cycles? are you hot more? cold? i could go on. just watch everything and if it changes and significantly. make note of it.
i can tell when i am having a flare up beause i will either gain weight but no additional size or size and no additional weight. i eat a TON of apples (for the natural diuretic effect) to get it off and i talk to my doc about adjusting dosages. if i start getting choked more often then i am normally, i talk to the doc. etc...
watch all your tests every time you test and see how they change. urge your doc to treat the problem with the medication for that - not all thryoid problems can be cured by synthroid - i strongly dislike synthroid personally. there are so many different kids of thyroid meds out there. synthetic, pig based, natural based, some for those allergic to other thyroid meds. the list is longer than some doctors would like to think. do your research.
My Mom had a goiter. It was a 'blood' goiter. It was a huge sac that was filled with blood. She had told doctors for years she had it and they would say she had fat on her neck. She had uterine cancer and they did a chest x-ray and see it. It hung down between her rib cage. One moron doctor tried to take a biopsy of it... how stupid can you get - it was like cutting into a water balloon! She had it removed finally successfully and they thought her thyroid would work - it did for awhile but now she has to take meds because it stopped working. The only removed part of her thyroid.
good luck!
Tori
