Hi, UK cysters! Hope you don't mind a Californian barging in here!
My brother gave me a wonderful, huge gift basket of food for a Christmas present (he works with gourmet and imported foods) and among the many items was a tin of Lyle's Golden Syrup, which I almost never see in this country. We have maple syrup here, but this I am sure is different.
I will probably look on the internet for recipes and ideas, but I thought it would be fun to know your favorite ways of using it. All I can think of is pouring over pancakes, which should be heavenly, but are there other ways to use it?
Any comments or ideas are appreciated!
Thank you! Kathryn

mm - havent had golden syrup in years In school i used to make pineapple upside down cake. You put g/syrup at the bottom of a pie dish, then pineapple slices and then make sponge over the top of it, and cook it in the oven. Then tip it upside down to serve.

I second Mazarins suggestion about using it for yummy flapjacks I sometimes have a little bit of it in porrige, too. Can't think of any other things I use it for though.

An Aussie cyster here - My turn to barge in! Before this PCOS business, golden syrup on buttered toast, or soft, white bread was a favourite. It can also be used in a variety of cookies (Google: Hokey Pokey biscuits, ANZAC biscuits, gingersnaps), steamed puddings, and to make "honeycomb" candy. Hope you enjoy it, whatever you end up using it for!
Thanks, cysters for the good ideas and links! I thought of posting this in the Aussie and Kiwi and Canadian forums, too, as I know the syrup is popular there, so I really appreciate all the international feedback!
By the way, I was intrigued by what looks like a dead lion with bees and the quotation under it on the label. I found out it's enigmatic meaning at the Tate and Lyle website (thanks, Mazarin):
The "lion and the bees" trademark
Abram Lyle had strong religious beliefs, which is why the Lyle's Golden Syrup trademark depicts a quotation from the Bible. In the Old Testament (Book of Judges 14:14) Samson was travelling to the land of the Philistines in search of a wife. During the journey he killed a lion, and on his return past the same spot he noticed that a swarm of bees had formed a comb of honey in the carcass. Samson later turned this into a riddle: "Out of the eater came forth meat and out of the strong came forth sweetness".
The "lion and bees" were quickly becoming identified with Lyle's Golden Syrup, and it was registered as Lyle's trademark in 1904. Plaistow employees did not forget to celebrate its 100th birthday in 2004.
However, no-one knows why Abram chose the wording 'Out of the strong came forth sweetness'. Was he referring to the tin holding the syrup - or the company producing it?
Thanks again!
Kathryn
