GOOD ARTICLE: Weight Regain Following Weight Loss Sugery (discusses low GI foods!!)
This is quite a long article, but worth the read. The doctor writing it, is not 'anti wls', but he attempts to explain why/how many people regain their weight following weight loss surgery.
Most interesting to me was the discussion regarding the consumption of HIGH glycemic foods by WLS patients, and the increase in hormones like grehlin in LAP BAND patients (not gastric bypass patients.)
That habit of eating high glycemic "meltable" foods like crackers often leads to grazing, just nibbling here and there. It's really easy if you think about it - you can eat a handful of goldfish crackers all day long and never feel full, but OH the calories and the appetite stimulation with all that starch.
I grazed a bit while I was pregnant, but have strict "meal time, snack time" kitchen slots now. No more grabbing a handful of peanuts just because peanuts sound good. It is very easy to regain the weight if you are not careful...
thanks for posting this. "failing" w/ WLS is I think everyones biggest fears. I think that I had to prepar my mind before surgery for the lifestyle change & now try to stick to it.
Food is no longer an emtional or social thing for me. I TRY to only food if it will benefit me health wise. I plan my meals out the day before, which helps as I am not just staring at all kinds of foods in the fridge/pantry & it gives me something to look forward to when i do get hungry (ie. im hungry but its okay because in an hour i will eat so & so)
