Not a new diagnosis, but I just need another alternative (and preferably a treatment) besides the bcp. My ob/gyn doesn't know much about PCOS. Thank you.

Lauren, Im from NoVa too. There are a few postings around here with some doctors, Mark Tannen (I think is his name) is who Ive heard is the best in the area, has a few offices. I cant see him because of insurance so I see my GP and she has been the one to treat me. Shes been great because shes not afraid to listen to me and try new things.
Her name is Ellen Campbell and shes in Reston, her office # is 703-736-5500.
Good luck and welcome to the board!

I am new to the site and have just tried to make an appointment with Dr. Eric Widra under the good recommendations here as well as other in the area who have also had good things to say. I just called and was shocked at how I was treated. I am a single 30 yr old with PCOS diagnosed about 5 years ago and struggling with it off and on, has been manageable for a while but now my periods have stopped again and my testosterone levels are confirmed high and I was traveling all the way to Philadelphia to see my old RE (Dr. Minassian, who is fantastic), and yes though I am single and not trying to conceive this minute, I am still concerned about preserving any fertility I can for the future, yet I was completely invalidated. The receptionist's first question was whether or not I was married or single and then if I was trying to conceive right now, after my answers, she said the Dr. wouldn't see me because I didn't want to have a baby right now and that a regular GYN would do the trick. I told her my regular GYN suggested an RE and that I had been seeing an RE for years regarding the PCOS and she continued to be abrasive and unhelpful. Maybe I'm being overly sensitive, but it is a hard enough thing to deal with as I approach my 31st birthday and all signs of ovulation are stopping, now it's as if any concern for my fertility or symptoms don't warrant the best Dr. or care because I'm not married or wanting to get pregnant right now. Now not only does everyone I work with know way more about my ovaries than I'm sure they wanted to (I had to have the conversation in my cubicle) but afterwards I just went into the bathroom and cried my eyes out. I wouldn't want to go to this office now even if they agreed to see me. It may be hard to believe but some women still suffer from the symptoms, both emotional and physical even if they aren't trying to conceive.
I love my reproductive endo, Dr. Sacks at Columbia Fertility Associates. They have diff offices. I see him out of his downtown DC office.

The moment my life changed:
The doctor examined my lab results, quietly flipping through page after page. He sighed, closed the file, placed it on the table and then looked up at me over his glasses and said, "You just dodged a bullet."

I see Dr. Tanen and he is in practice with Dr. Harvey Rubenstein, and Dr. Frank Crantz, who are also top rated Endochronologists. In fact I believe Dr. Crantz was in the magazine "Washingtonian"'s listing of "top docs", or was it Rubenstein....
Dr. Tanen was great through my thyroid cancer last year and has me on Armour Thyroid now. I think he is fabulous but I wish he was not so busy! I need to go back and get back on track with my PCOS treatment asap.

Best of Luck to you finding the best doctor for you,
I have seen Dr. Rifka for about a year now and he has not been able to fully cure my issues, more importantly he has ignored it when I tell him I am have recurring issues after a surgery last Winter.
WORST of all, his office staff is very rude, condescending, and nasty, they don't have any problem treating people in pain and sick like well, frankly, I don't think he cares about anything but the money at this point.
He has tons of patients and is relatively famous as a political activist, the money he makes goes into his political activities, it's pretty obvious he isn't in the work for the people, but the money these days.
I actually was diagnosed with PCOS about 4 years ago and was just diagnosed with thyroid problems and I saw Dr. Crantz. I don't know about Dr. Tanen and Dr. Rubenstein, but I was absolutely not impressed with Dr. Crantz. Maybe it was a personality thing or something, but he didn't listen to anything I had to say, and when it came to the PCOS concerns I had he told me the only thing it affects is when I want to get pregnant and that if I am not trying to right now then it shouldn't affect any other part of my life. Hopefully this saves someone some of the frustration that I went through with this doctor!
Is the reaction "if you're not trying to conceive don't worry about PCOS" common?
I just joined SoulCysters today. I'm also looking for a good endocrinologist in the D.C. area. While reading through the posts, I wondered if it was common for a doctor to treat PCOS patients as nonentities if they aren't actively trying to conceive? I figured that wouldn't be a doctor I would want to go to anyhow. I just didn't expect that reaction from a doctor that did have PCOS patients!
That has typically been the response that I have gotten from doctors. I don't know if that's what a lot of other women have experienced, but I have found it very difficult to find a doctor that will work with me on the PCOS stuff. I think you just need to kind of shop around and see who you can find...
Thanks Fexyfaye. Forewarned is forearmed and all that. I was diagnosed in Jan 2008 by my GP, Dr. Mancini and Dr. Korkowski. I have never seen Dr Mancini but Dr. Korkowski does seem good. He actually listened to what I had to say, did some blood work and prescribed metformin. I don't think he is an expert on PCOS but he certainly was familiar with the symptoms. He also didn't act like he thought I was a hypochondriac. Guess I got lucky on the first go. I still think I should see a good edocrinologist though. Which, knowing my luck, will be a lot tougher to find.
That's great that you are starting off with a supportive and knowledgable doctor! I always feel like I am the one that knows more about the PCOS than my doctor does in my appointments. I myself am trying to get a doctor to discuss the option of Metformin with me right now because I have heard of such great results from these other women that have been put on it, but I have yet to get a doctor to seriously listen to me with it. Good luck finding an endocrinologist! I am seeing Dr. Langley in Fairfax and he is very nice, but is not very open to different PCOS treatments other than the Pill (but I am seeing him for a thyroid problem right now anyway, so that's not as important I guess...). But good luck and stay strong and upbeat! That seems to be the hardest part sometimes :-)
