Angry GPs, grr

I never thought I would have this said to me but yesterday, I heard the immortal words "No, I'm not going to refer you to a specialist since nobody will treat you if you are not trying to conceive." I said "That's hardly fair...fertility isn't the only issue with PCOS, I have other problems and I need help!" But to no avail...
This after years and years of doctors refusing to help me try and conceive.
New GP methinks.
Gods, it's not like I don't *want* to try for a baby...I just *can't* at the moment.
Grrr.

It's good to see you back, but I'm sorry to hear you're not getting anywhere with GPs. Grrrrr, I agree, new GP.

I'll email you when I get the chance, I need to catch up on your news!

Unhappy (((HUGS)))

Totally know where ur coming from. I've basically just been told the same thing. Stuck on the pill and discharged after 1 appt by the gynae. It's so hurtful. Feel like i've got the forgotten illness.I would love to ttc but its not possible in any way at the mo. Fertility isnt the only issue. I'm trying to increase awareness but when it falls on deaf ears what can u do? xx

I was told the same thing when I first went to the specialist, they basically said there was nothing they could do and go back if I wanted to get pregnant. Keep pressing them, thats what I did and they gave me treatment. I just kept going back saying I was in agony and it was getting worse. They will eventually do something.

Hi Shira, not all GP's are bad (mine is lovely), make an appointment if you can with a different GP and ask to see an endocrinlogist (not sure if that is the right spelling). I haven't got a partner but all my symptoms were so bad that I had to see someone and I got sent to an endo. And I have everything that is going. Wish I hadn't laughed at my sister when we were children and she had the acne and I didn't. Anyway good luck. Will be thinking of you.

Default Consultants Grr!!

Had an appointment at the Royal Infirmary in Edinburgh with a Female Endocrinologist in the Fertility Department and came out in tears!! I was basically told that some of my symptoms were to do with the PCOS but that they couldn't treat them - just go and see your doctor and get put on the pill. As for the rest of my symptoms, she said they could be down to my depression (have been on Prozac since July but cut down to one in January). So what about the backache, the upset stomachs, the acne, the weight problem, the shaking if I don't eat when I am hungry??? I was so mad when I came out - she even took a phone call half way through the consultation!

Default Gynaecologists in London

I also went to see a gynaecologist a few months ago who was not very understanding.

Does anyone know of any good gynaecologists in London?

Many thanks!

Emma

I had to have large ovarian cysts removed and ovarian drilling in January 2009.

It's not a gynaecologist you want to be seeing, since PCOS is not a gynaecological disorder, it is an endocrine disorder which causes gynae problems. You need to see a reproductive endocrinologist (whether you're trying for a baby or not). Unfortunately I can't recommend one cos I've never seen a good one in London (or anywhere else, actually), but I can say that if you see a gynaecologist as well, avoid PM Shira for Doctor's name(I think that's how you spell it) at Bart's and the London LIKE THE PLAGUE. He was rude and dismissive, he told me I was a liar when I took him my food diary like he'd demanded of me and seen the tiny amounts I'd eaten yet I'd still gained weight, and didn't seem to understand why I had a problem with not having periods.
I will stop ranting now.
Good luck!

Hi Shira
I've edited the doctor's name out of your post - I know you feel strongly about it, but Kat could be in trouble if we name and shame. Cysters can PM you for it.

I've PMd you a couple of times sice you came back - don't know if you got them. Hope you are getting on OK. It's good to see you around.

Hi Shira,

Thank you for getting back to me. I have been spending time reading this web-site and I now understand a bit more about PCOS. I have just booked an appointment to see my Doctor and I am going to ask to try Metformin to balance out my high testoterone levels to help my irregular periods, acne and hirsutism.

Thanks again!

Emma
