I really liked this sideshow/article. I was recently diagnosed with PCOS and though that meant that I was going to become overweight and stay that way (based on my dr. interpretation of the syndrome). This is one of many articles I have found on PCOS...i really like the explanation of how it effects thin women as well and the benefits of Met. ENJOY!
Just go to the website and click where it says PCOS Patient Handout on Paper: PDF file
This is such an amazing article...I wish I would have read it 6 months ago...
Thank you for posting it!

Many thin women with PCOS do not have elevated androgen levels as usually defined. It has been estimated that as many as 20% of patients with PCOS have normal androgen levels.9 We found this to be true in our patient population and have in fact observed that many of these women were, at one point, very thin and frequently athletic. It has, in fact, been hypothesized that the relative hyperandrogenicity of these young women may account for some of their athletic ability10
I was very thin and athletic in high school and most people assumed that was why my preiods were irregular. And I guess tooting my own horn, but I was the best runner on my team and had the school record for the 2 mile.. mybe PCOS wa why? interesting!

Wow- I keep reading more and LOVE this article! It has always taken me 3-4 months to get pregnant on met all three times and this article talks about it taking about 3 months for the met to really take effect. So nice to read something that really makes sense to me finally.

Kat- the link for the PDF handout is also very interesting if you didn't see it. There's a link at the top of that article for it. Kind of long (16 pages I think) but so informative that I forwarded it to my RE to recommend they hand out something similar to their patients. Maybe you want to sticky that part too?

I am so glad everyone liked the article! I thought it was awesome. And it really helped me understand whats going on with my body. It also helped put my mind at ease and despite what my first gyno recommended, it pushed me to start taking Met.-----It just goes to show you how important it is to find a dr. who is really up to date on their research with PCOS!!
((The use of gonadotropins is also difficult in this group – ovarian hyper-responsivity is typical with the attendant risks of multiple pregnancy and ovarian hyperstimulation))
I just like to ask you cysters, is multiple pregnancy a bad thing??! if all would be healthy babis, I would like quads
You are much braver than I!!! Twins, maybe, although I prefer not. I have a bunch all close together, but can't even imagine 4 at one time!

I like this article just because it confirmed something I've suspected. I have not been diagnosed with PCOS but I definitely have a significant number of the symptoms.
But I've never had problems with my weight--I'm 120 pounds and 5'6". I've always wondered if starting my periods really late (almost 17) messed up my hormones. Or possibly that the ratio of estrogen to androgens in my body was always wrong right from the start, and that's why I started my periods so late. I had a lot of hair under my arms at 11, but no periods until 5 years later (so obviously, enough androgens for puberty but not enough estrogen). And I was really thin--90 pounds when I started high school. It's so interesting to read that low estrogen in youth could set things up for trouble later on.
