I have light brown hair that has been slowly but surely getting white/grey hair mixed in that seemed to start about when my other pcos issues started about 4 and a half years back. Maybe thats just a coincidence but I thought I would throw that info out along with the rest of this...I just turned 32 so though getting white hair seems premature to me, I know people can go grey sooner than this, and I by no means have alot of it yet...what hair I have left is 99% light brown. But Ive been more and more annoyed lately with not only losing my hair, but seeing strands go white here and there, so earlier today when I was looking in the mirror and spotted one on top sticking out funny- I decided to cut it off closer to my scalp. Well I took a look at the hair, and it went from white to a little bit of light brown to darker brown the closer it got to my scalp. It was a fully pigmented hair at the base with about an inch of color. I thought thats weird, it must be a fluke, so I found another and cut that one off closer too, and found the same thing! I dont know if they are all doing that or what. Some seem to be white at the base still.
How does ones grey or white hair go back to having color? Or maybe I should be asking...do hormone fluctuations affect hair color and this might be some new pcos related thing now, or do I possibly have some other thing wrong with me that could cause grey hair and then change it back? Ive never heard of anyones hair growing back with color to it after it goes grey.
A few months ago I took some Shen Min because it was supposed to help with hair loss, tho Ive read its supposed to help with grey hair too but never gave that much creedence and never took it for that reason at all. I only took it sporadically- maybe a weeks worth or over a couple weeks time and then quit taking it. I didnt fel it did anything at all for the hair loss but never really gave it a chance either. They were kinda yucky smelling and looking pills and hard to swallow so I stopped. So I doubt thats whats this is from. I guess youre supposed to take it for 3 months or so to get any benefit. Ive not been on any drugs, pills, vitamins or anything over the last few months which is what I figure I have for the colored growth. Has anyone else had this happen to them? Anyone familiar with what would cause this kind of thing? I cant find any info on the internet about hair going back to its color once white. Anyone have any thoughts?

seems as though i had come across some information on premature gray and bone density, but i think that premature would be earlier than 32.
some other things that can really make a difference is when either your parents or grandparents started to gray. i personally found my first gray hair at the ripe old age of 7, had some until my early 20's and i now have a decent amount of gray/white hair. i just turned 35 the fourth of july. when i was at my mom's parents house (several years ago, my grandfather was still alive and he has been dead for 5 years) anyway we were looking at old pictures of my mom's family when she was young and when my grandparents were younger...my grandfather said he was salt and pepper by the time he was 25, so that would make sense.
i used to say i would be fine with going completely gray, i just didn't want to loose my hair, unfortunately that started thining and fallling out about 5 years ago......
i know this was long and it probably didn't really help.....but have a great day anyway.....

I have found in my own hair, black hair that is lighter at the roots. Most of my white hair is completely white.
It is possible that something got into the hair shaft (like air) and blocked the pigment from the growing hair. Or it is possible that what ever that stuff is you took 3 months ago did work and you just now have noticed.
I don't think grey hair has anything to do with PCOS as many many people grey as early as their late teens to early twenties. I am 32 as well and have been greying for about 4 years now. I have noticed more and more mostly in the top front, of course I can't see the back of my head.
Edited: Let me make myself clear. I didn't mean to say that it has "nothing" to do with PCOS, but rather that it isn't, imo, a symptom of PCOS. Yes, greying hair has to do with hormones, but there are plenty of women without PCOS that grey early as well as men that do too (even those without syndrome x).
Anyway, I did a pluck check the last night, and I did find one of the dozen I plucked had dark root area and white the rest of the shaft.

I am 25 and have a "patch" of white hair on the top of my hair. I have noticed that some of the hairs are white with some color on it. But i didn't notice which end the color part was. (if it was closer to the scalp or to the end) I will pay closer attention next time I pluck them out and let you know. Of course, I was devastated that I was getting white hair at my age. I started noticing it at age 24. But they were very long, so I assume they had been growing for quite some time before I even noticed. I am assuming this is just another symtom of PCOS, right?
I didn't start showing symptoms (at all) of PCOS until after my son was born (when I was 22) but I started finding grays when I was 19 (I blame it all on my DH! LOL).
I will say that hormone fluctuations DO have an impact on hair color. I know this because my natural hair color has changed quite a bit since having my children. My hair used to be reddish brown. It's now a dark, dull, lifeless brown. It's not uncommon for women who've had children to have hair color changes so I'm going to assume that PCOS will cause some similar issues...

I have had grey hair since i was 11 years old. I am now 25 and have to dye my hair every 3 weeks to cover it up.
Until I saw this post, I had actually never known anyone else my age to have grey hair (or at least as much as I have have).
Maybe it could be yet another side effect from Pcos???
I started finding white hairs when I was 24. Long before that, though, I would find these springy, curly brown/black hairs mixed in with my head of straight, fine blonde hair. Anytime I want to go looking for them, I can find a whole bunch. I always figured the white hairs were a gift from my grandmother, who was totally white by the time she was 30.
Some hairs, as they seem to be going white, look like the pigment is sputtering on and off - a quarter inch of brown, half an inch of blond, then some white, then blonde and brown again. I suspect that if they were left alone long enough (instead of plucked out and gawked at by yours truly), they would eventually become completely white.
On the flip side, I had a hair growing out of the side of my left breast that had gone dark and wiry years ago suddenly give up the ghost and return to being a light vellus hair. I'm not complaining. Any body hairs that want to do that have my express permission and gratitude. I'm just a little confused is all.

Actually hair does not turn colors, it grows that color, so those hairs would not go completely white.
Interestingly, I found that most people who believe that they or someone they know has turned grey over night, isn't exactly correct. In fact, the reason they look as though they did is because their darker hair has fallen out. This makes sense since we are constantly losing hair everyday. The "normal" rate of hairloss per day is between 50-100. Makes me feel a little more closer to normal, whatever that is. We even have a shedding season, just like other animals. I know for some of us, knowing what the normal shed rate is, doesn't make you feel better, because of the lack of hair already. The problem isn't the shedding itself, but rather that the follicles are not re-growing as they should. But that is another jproblem.
Anyway, if you want to read more about it, just do a search on male pattern baldness or rate of hair loss online. You will find a lot and maybe even find more on why hair grows grey.

Well it is really nice to know that there are other woman out there that have went gray as early as I have.
I am currently 23 and I have been getting numerous gray hairs since high school, I used to say they added character but now I end up dying my hair about once a month. I just got married and one of my friends was laughing one day and dared me not to dye my hair the month of the wedding so it would match my dress! It was funny but I still wanted to smack her! :-)
My mother is only the ripe old age of 44 and has been getting gray since about the time I started high school (I must have been a handful for her and myself in high school *lol*) and anyway, I have about three times as much gray as she does. She just laughs and says that I am getting what I deserve! :-)
Wow this is long, just thought I would share about my hair! Take care everyone.

i started finding grey hair in high school, i am now 21 and have almost a full head of grey/white hair. instead of coloring it all, i have it highlighted with blonds and browns and it kinda blends in the grey/white. my dr said that stress is a factor of premature grey but that family history is the main factor. anyway, i'll be hightlighting the rest of my lift..lol
I'm probably over 50% grey myself. I started going grey around 17 and started coloring my hair. I always blamed it on my dad since he went grey early. Now that I'm seeing an RE, I haven't colored my hair in over a year. It's funny to see people's reactions when they see me for the first time in awhile.
