Default Groin area Rash ?

Hello Ladies,

This is my first post. I've been lurking for a month gathering all kinds of great information since being diagnosed back in late March.

Here's my problem. I started Metformin slowly. Never had any bad problems. In less than a week after starting my full dose of Met (1500 mg) I developed a very itchy rash in my groin area (the whole area that your underwear touches at the legs). I haven't done anything at all different. No lotions, perfumes, soaps, strange diets... But this rash is very itchy - no puss or anything like that. Just red and itchy, kinda like a diaper rash. Using hydrocortisone cream only helps it not to itch, but it doesn't seem to heal. I've read that some people can get allergic reactions to Met, which comes in the form of rashes, intching, etc... Told my doctor's office, and they called in a new perscription for Glucophage (which is a lot more expensive).

So I'm wondering what you all think of this. Would appreciate any advice. I'm considering just not taking anything anymore such as Met or Glucophage, but I don't want to be "rash" in my decisions.

Hoping for some feedback on this very irritating problem.

TIA,

Dollyface

I would make an appointment to have your doctor take a look at it. It may be a reaction to the met, or it may be a yeast infection. I had one in that area in the fall.

I just had a Dr appt about that same problem, it was a yeast infection. the Dr said you could get a yeast infection just about anywhere that skin is folded and moist. Go to your doc and they have meds that will fix it no time. i had mine for almost a year, I kept thinking it was exema.

I agree with the others...sounds like a skin rash (yeasty). Probably a coincidence and not due to the met.

Thanks so much, ladies, for all the good advice.

I kept switching back and forth from thinking it was a yeast infection to being allergic to Met. I've never had a yeast infection like this one, that's why I was so confused.

Last night I treated it with Monostat 1-day. The redness in the groin area is almost all gone. That makes me so happy that I wasn't allergic to Met. I've heard about Met being so beneficial and was sad at the prospect at having to stop taking it.

Now I have to figure out how to keep from continuing to get yeast infections, which I hear are common for us women with PCOS.

Thanks again!

ONe thing you can do is limit your starches, grains and sugars for a while when you have an overgrowth. Also, if it is an area you can keep dry (like a skinfold), that will help too. I get them every now and then (especially while I am pregnant because I have interesting folds and creases that aren't usually there) and I have found that a little diaper rash ointment (desitin) can also go a long way--just apply, wait a little while and wash it off (some residue will remain, but won't have "ointment smell" and this will somewhat protect the area and help it to stay dry.)
