Default GTT Lab Results, and Avandamet (Avandia?)

I got my glucose tolerance test results back:
Fasting glucose: 26.7
Fasting insulin: ? I presume 0,they did not tell me
2-hour glucose: 139
2-hour insulin: 245

That's scraping the very top of the 'normal' range for glucose, but sky-high on the insulin. This link shows that both numbers are actually very very high. Clearly the Metformin (500mg twice a day) is not even making a dent, and my new doctor wants to put me on Avandamet (I think it is Avandia) 500mg, twice a day. I hope it will help. I know that I totally felt like $hit after that test, and it's a relief to know why.

I got the message in a voicemail and the nurse had gone for the day so I didn't get to ask her a lot of questions. Do those numbers actually indicate diabetes? Or just insulin resistance? Isn't Avandia diabetes medicine? I didn't think people took it just for insulin resistance.

Avandamet is metformin/Avandia in one pill. Some studies have shown that Avandia may do bad things to your heart: http://www.fda.gov/bbs/topics/NEWS/2007/NEW01636.html

You're still on a pretty low dose of metformin. If you decide you don't want to try the Avandamet, you could talk to your doctor about a higher dose of met. Many people are on doses between 1500mg and 2500mg, so if you're only taking 1000mg, there's room to try a little more.

Thanks for the info. I think the thinking on not just increasing my Met, is that the Met seems to be doing NOTHING at all for me. I did increase to 1500mg on my own at one point and didn't notice a difference (I did it for a month). I'm going to try the Avandamet for a couple months and see what happens. Every RX seems to ultimately be bad for something, and if it helps me to lose weight, that is good for my heart, so maybe it will balance out.
