I received this email from a dear friend of mine...I thought you all might be interested in possibly signing the petition.
Girls,
Some dear family friends have struggled for many years to start their own family, and after more than their share of heartbreaks, are in the last stages of an international adoption from Guatamala. They've been sent pictures of their son, fallen in love with him, had a shower, prepped the nursery, the whole nine yards. Only now the Guatamalan government is about to act to suspend all foreign adoptions. To lose this child now would be devastating. They are trying to remain hopeful, but as you might imagine are stretched to the end of their rope.
They forwarded to me the following message and petition, which I hope you'll consider signing also.
Kristin
www.petitiononline.com/foafoa1/petition.html This is a link to an online petition to the US Dept of State regarding a change in adoption policies and laws between the United States and Guatemala. As some of you know, the outgoing president of Guatemala and his wife, with the help of Unicef, are attempting to end all intercountry adoptions, including those that are pending (like ours) and in process. It all has to do with a lot of politics, bureaucracy and money from Unicef being promised for orphanages in Guatemala (and lining govt pockets). They have proposed amendments to a new bill to be voted on in the Congress in Guatemala in the coming weeks to grandfather in all pending adoptions and not strand over 5000 children in a system that has no facilities to house or feed them. We are hopeful that this will all work out and that we will bring our son home in January, however there is a possibility that all of this will come to a halt and we will have no recourse. Please, please, use this link and sign this petition. It is now over 25,000 strong, and needs every name it can get. We would appreciate everyone’s support by signing this petition and passing it on to others. For more info go to: www.jcics.org (see Guatemala 5000 initiative) and www.guatadopt.com. You can also get to the petition by going thru guatadopt.com. Thanks so much, David & Wendy
