I havn't seen a metal speculum(sp?) in years, I think now they use disposable plastic ones. While an exam is not the funnest experience in the world it really isn't horrible. I personally would rather have an exam than go to the dentist, but then again I hate the dentist It should just be mildly uncomfortable. I know it's easier said than done but try not to get to freaked.

Just hang in there and it's over before you know it!
Good Luck!

I get hurt every time but that's because I have some sort of inflamation behind my uterus that's probably a cyst...
It doesnt take very long though and it's for the best.. you just gotta grin and bear it. And try not to panic yourself, the doc will make sure you're alright and comfortable (at least as comfy as you can be in such a situation.)... it's not all a horror story, it's very medical...

It is a little scary at first, and it helped for me to go to a female doctor... I haven't ever been to a male gyno and don't plan on it. I didn't have a mom around to go with me but if your mom is available to go with you into the room that might help as well. You can also ask them to use the small speculum (what they insert into you and open to get a better look - looks like a metal duck's bill, sorta.) since you've never been examined before.
BTW - All of my doctors still use metal specs, I didn't even know that plastic ones existed... however, I think the only difference might be that the metal can get cold in those icy exam rooms. My RE (reproductive endocrinologist) has a bottle of lubricant warmer, which she places on the spec before she uses it, so that helps too.
Good luck and try not to be too nervous - trust me, the exam is the easy part |

She didn't make me get an exam because she didn't think I could tolerate it. (due to lack of 'experience' and that I was extremely freaked out and tense >.< ) So, she saved me the uncomfortableness of that. She did however take a look down there without any freaky instruments, just a q-tip, and she had me do most of the touching part so she could look, which made it alot less scary for me. I agree with those who said they'd only go to a female doctor. I wouldn't have even felt comfortable talking to a male doctor about AF, much less being looked at undressed. >.< lol But, that's just me. ^_^() |

You can also just explain you are nervous and ask would they please let you know before they did anything. I think some or most docs already do sort of walk you through the process, but I think it helps rather than not knowing where they are going to touch you and jumping off the table out of surprise LOL.
Oh, and your feet will be up by their face, so wear clean socks. |

He just asked me a few questions. Criticized me for being fat and the lack of AF and then refused to put me on BCP. He didn't do an exam. He just barely used the tip of his finger. ( Which to me was worse because I HATE guys).
I now have an appt with a woman dr and I have a feeling that it is going to be great!
Just keep us updated!
