Default Gyno or Endo?

I have been diagnosed with pcos twice by two different gynos. Neither one was very worried. They didn't put me on any medications and didn't suggest any treatment options. I am going back to my gyno on the 19th and I am going to ask some question. Should I schedule an appt with an endo? At what point do you schedule an appt with an endo. Do you need a referral? Any advice ladies would be helpful. Thank you.

Personally, I would make an appt. w/ an endo. I've only been to 2 different gyn's. 1st one said could be pcos. 2nd one said no at first, but after a lap, said I did have it. Neither gave me anything besides bcp and sent me on my way. I finally got tired of that when the cysts came back in less than a year. I made an appt. w/ an endo and he put me on Met. I am not overweight or ir. I'm glad I made that choice b/c now I feel like a doctor is actually listening to me and trying to help correct the problem. Eventhough pcos causes mainly gyno probs, it stems from the endocrine system. Endo's are usually better able to treat the issue while a lot of gyno's mask the issues w/ bcp's.

If you need a refferal or not is really on your insurance. I would either talk to your HR person, or call the insurance company directly and ask if you need one. I did not, so I just called the endo's office and made the appt. If you do, talk to your doc when you go back next week and ask them for the referral. If you're worried they won't give you one, search this site and print as much info as you can so you're prepared to argue your case. And remember, you are in charge of your healthcare. If you don't like how you're being treated or not getting the answers you need, go to someone else.

Good Luck and let us know how it goes!

Hi steph!

I second starlite - i went to a gyno in my 1st year of university (back in 1998) bec i did not have a period in all of +-18 months. She did a sonar and told me i have cysts, put me on bc and told me it wasn't necessary to see her again! WTH!

Fast forward 5 years and my wonderful GP who suspected that i had pcos within minutes of meeting him (he told me i had all the classic symptoms! ain't a good doc a marvelous thing!) and referred met to an endo. I'm on bc as well as met as well as a workout and dietry plan.

I also think that an endo is the best doc to see as pcos is an endocronological problem - giving you just bc is just masking the symptoms and not addressing the underlying problem.

Good luck and let us know how it's going!

Thanks Sophie and Starlite
Sophie I have been to two differenent gynos and one put my bcp and the other did at first but now I have hbp and I am not on anything. It seems to me that gynos really don't think its a real problem.

I started out with an endo with no luck. He did blood tests and took a history and sent me on my way. He "suspected" I have PCOS. I was not happy and found a great doctor who is an OB/GYN who specializes in PCOS. I am just getting the results of my tests back but he diagnosed me almost as soon as I walked I his office. The initial consult was 3 hours and very thorough. I am looking forward to working with him to control my PCOS symptoms.

Wow! Tweetergor that sounds great that you have a doctor that will spend 3 hours with you on a consult. You are very lucky. What medications did he put you on? I went back to my gyno on friday and asked a lot of questions. He actually listened to me. He put me on progesterone and is sending me to another doctor to get my insulin levels checked. He said he would only put me on metformin if I was trying to get pregnant. He also said that this other doctor might go ahead and put me on it.

Red face I don't mean to presume..

Hi, I am brand new here. My diagnosis was confirmed on April 14. I noticed you are from Alabama. I knew nothing of PCOS until my ob/gyn visit on April 6th. I had been going to doctors about the symptoms for over 12 years. The ob/gyn immediately recognized the symptons and did the appropriate tests. He spent 4-5 hours with me that day and has called me during off hours to make sure I got on medication as soon as possible. If you would like his name, I would be happy to send it to you, please let me know. I highly recomment him if you do not find an endo.

Good luck, and thank you for sharing your stories here.

Kendra
