I had high numbers back in January because I had a raging kidney infection. They were 7.7. I have Type 2.
I had them taken yesterday and they were 6.3.
The nurse, who I'm not so sure knew I am diabetic, said that my number should be 6 or below. My doctor, when I saw her yesterday, said 7 or below. My OLD obgyn, who I am still in touch with via email, said that 6.3 is excellent.
Who is right?

I was told I "probably" have type 2 with a 6.0 on the maximum dose of glucophage. They said they aimed for their diabetes patients to be below 7. I was told 6 was awesome for a diabetic. I am pretty sure 6.3 is great too. I would trust an old ob over a nurse.

An A1c of 6-7 is really too high to settle for. that means your average glucose levels are in the upper 100's. Nerve and retinal damage begins in those levels. I would aim for NON diabetic range of low 5's. My A1c last month was 5.3.....and thankfully I am able to keep it there with 2000mg of metformin alone. BTW I was just diagnosed in November with an A1c of 11.5 and fasting BG of 480!! so it can be done.
