Default had to cut my hair because it kept coming out.

Hi everyone! OK so up until yesterday my hair was really long, about to the end of my back.. Every time I took a shower or brushed it out really well it would just start to come out.

So one day while I was taking a shower the tub water would not drain, so I reached down and there it was! A whole bunch of hair. So I called my mom up and I asked her if I could come down to her place to get a hair cut. Does anyone think that this is part of my PCOS and what should I do about this?

Well, hair loss can be/is a symptom of PCOS. I totally understand *hugs*! I did the same thing myself 2 weeks ago. My hair was down to the middle of my back, and I had been growing it out for a couple years. It was getting thinner and falling out in chunks, so I went to get it cut short. :-( It was so depressing! It's short and layered now, so it looks thicker and the hair that does fall out isn't so horrifying. Plus, I think getting a haircut and new style helps with self-esteem!

Cutting your hair off isn't gonna make it not fall out. You need to talk to your doc to get on something that might help that. I think spiro is the main one people take. I know the feeling of clogging the shower. I used to always brush my hair really well before i got in the shower. I recently got a perm and it's hard to get a brush through it when it's dry, so I take the brush into the shower with me and comb the conditioner through. Any hair that comes out on my hands when I wash or rinse, I stick to the wall rather than wash it down the drain. When I'm done with the shower, I gather up the hair and throw it away. Sounds kinda gross to some I'm sure, but it sure beats a clogged drain! Good luck!

Based solely on my own experience, I'd disagree with this, to some extent. For me, the longer my hair grew, the more weight the root was carrying, so it seemed like more did fall out. So I pretty much have resigned myself to wearing really cute short cuts. It's more sassy in my opinion, so it totally works for me.

I love having my hair shorter I think- fits the whole "artsy" thing for me.

Yeah I can agree with you. My hair was all the way down to the end of my back and it felt like it weighed down my entire head, especially when I would get a shower, and it would fall out a lot more.

It can be from the PCOS, from testosterone/androgens being to high, from meds that you are on or from something stressful in your life previously about 3 months ago.

It isnt alway associated with PCOS. For me it wasnt suprisingly. I had this.

Hi Cortana,

PCOS and high Free Testosterone levesl - It"s almost definately why your hair is thinnng or falling out. The good news is - if its just started and it sounds like it has. You can do something about reducing your Free Testosterone levels. Its also happens to women with Free Testostereone which is not that high - its just a matter of how sensitive your hair follicles are to any testosterone.

Have you wondered why some men are nearly bald by 25 and others only get to the thinning stage in their late 30's...sensitive to testosterone varies.

With PCOS your general Testosterone can be within normal range. Women with PCOS usually have a higher free testosterone level. (eg Mine is 14 and normal is between 1 and 8).
To lose hair due to this high FT - you need be genetically predisposed to this. Has anyone in the family got thinning hair, males or females.
Thats why some women with PCOS lose hair and some do not. Us women who have hair follicles which are sensitive to T - will tend to lose hair as our Free T goes up, just like the males but not as bad, as males have far me T than even women with PCOs.
Hope this helps.

OMG, you do the hair on the wall thing too? LOL, I feel vindicated! I continually run my fingers thru my hair with the conditioner in, and I throw what comes out at the wall, like you would throw pasta to make sure that it is done. Then when my shower is done, I throw the wad in the trash. It is sick, I know, but it keeps my drain clean, and there is NOTHING in this world worse than digging out a nasty sticky wad of hair from the drain. Thanks for making me feel just a lil less crazy!

What about body hair? Are the follicles different again? Can a woman lose no scalp hair but have excess body hair instead? Or are they all the same follicles?

Hey that is a pretty good idea (the hair on the wall) if my hair starts to do that again I will have to try it. Since I cut it not much has fallen out, a little here and there but thats it. It is so gross finding all of that hair clogging up the drain (yuck!!)

LOL I do the same thing with the hair on the wall thing..my ex bf thought I was weird for doing it, but it makes sense to not clog the drain with all that yucky hair.
