Well after Gastric Bypass you don't absorb your meds fully or vitamins. Now I have all the the PCOS symtoms and the worst one is that I get suicidal. My psycharatrist says there's nothing he can do because it isn't psychological and it only happens a week before my period and during, which is half the month and the other half I'm fine. I want to stop my period all together without having a hysterectmy at 28 I can't deal with this and I don't have insurance for a GYN only a clinic and they don't know shi** I don't want an IUD, I'm not comfotable with them.
What about Norplant or the shot or super high doses of hormones. I'm already on Yasmine.
Ummm I take anti depressants and had gastric bypass 14 months ago and I am on a normal dose and seem to get the effects from them. Some stuff we don't absorb totally but you may just need a higher dose to help you? I wish I could be of more help but I guess I'm confused. I was on the birth control pill Microgestin and it helped make my periods super light and very little PMS you might try that?

You dr won't raise your dosage until you get to feeling better? I always remind my drs that I dont absorb well so I need a higher/longer dosage. Im sorry Im not much help but Im sure someone will have some insight for you. I hear the patch works well for WLS patients.
How long has it been since your surgery? It's a hard adjustment. It took me a couple years to relearn my body. I would call your surgeons nurse. Im sure they can help or have some insight for you as well!
Good luck. Try the WLS Divas thread. There are several ladies there that can maybe help you.

I had my surgery on Aug 2 and I've had my period 3 times since then. I shouldn't have had it at all because I only take the active pills in my Yasmin pack.
My surgeons office is of no help with this and they say this is not their area of expertese. The GYN clinic doesn't know what to do, so I am at a loss.
First off congrats on your surgery. Secondly it sounds like you may have PMDD and you need to see an OB/GYN for this. PMDD is an extreme version of PMS. Since you mentioned that you have breakthrough bleeding with your pill you may not be absorbing enough of it for it to be as effective as it needs to be. I know you're not into an IUD but have you thought about the NuvaRing? It's as effective as the pill, one ring per month, and since it's not involving your digestive system (it absorbs through the tissues in the vaginal/cervical area) it's more effective for women who've had the RNY surgery. Another thing to remember is that estrogen is stored in fat cells and as you loose weight this hormone is released in greater amounts than normal which can also lead to increased PMS symptoms as well as funky periods (timing & flow wise).

You dr won't raise your dosage until you get to feeling better?
GYN clinic is clueless. Basically they'll do whatever I ask, but I'm not a Doc and I don't know what to ask for. The Yasmine comes in predosed pakages. If I have to double the dose, the only way I could do this is to fill the second prescription at another pharmcy and pay for it myself. The money would be a hardship I would gladly face. You can't fight my insurance. I have medacaid.
I don't want the Nueva ring. I don't like the idea of putting something up there and having to check on it and having to remove it. I won't even use tampons. That's why I said I rather have a higher dose hormone, the shot or Norplant.
How is PMDD treated besides antidepressants? I don't respond to antidepressants, I have been on over 25 of them over 13 years.
I just need something else that will both give me the hormones and be an effective BC.
You could try the depo shot - but it can cause weight gain or your weight loss to stall. Because you are so new post-op you may not be affected, but I had gastric bypass and over the course of the 6 months on the shot I gained 12 pounds. After stopping, it has all since come back off.

I agree with Leigha. The depo shot may be the way to go. However I'm disappointed in the GYN clinic in that they are so clueless. They should be the ones directing care (with your voice of course) but not just leaving it up to you.

Why does the Depo shot cause weight gain?
(I've only lost 7 pounds in the past 5 weeks, I need to lose 150)
How often do you get your period with the shot?
Also, whats the best thing to take for the pain? I don't mind asking for an RX because I've been taking about 6 asprin a day. The cramps ar soo painful and my ovaries hurt.
Admittedly, I know NOTHING about WLS, but since your physicians aren't giving you the care you need, is it possible to get a referral to another one?
Also, while I know you're in great physical distress, right now, I would keep very detailed notes of your requests and conversations with your doctors, along with their responses (or lack thereof.) It never hurts to document situations where you feel care is lacking.

Kat- I guessed you missed the part where I said my insurance will only cover GYN clinics. I can't go to a Private practioner. I've been to several in the city and they are all the same. They lose my chart, so I have to start with my story every time which takes up the very few minutes I get with a Doc. They run tests and lose the results. If I have a 10:00 appointment I'm there until 3PM because the have to take my insurance info, then I wait, they take my blood pressure then I have to go back out to the waiting room. This happens about 5 times per visit.
I only got the Gastric Bypass surgery because another doctor severely damaged my stomach during a surgery and a top notch weight loss doctor felt bad and fixed me up and gave me GB free of charge. He is a great doc, but he admits that GYN isn't his field and is unsure of what I should do.
PS can anyone answer the questions of my previous post?
Wow, you must live in a city that doesn't have a very good healthcare system. There was a time before I got married that I didn't have insurance at all and I went to a gyn clinic and it ran like any other doctor's office.
Anyway, I don't have any research right in front of me, but was told by my doctor that the super high dose in hormones in the shot can cause weight gain plus it usually increases one's appetite. Which again that may not be a problem for you so newly post-op, I'm not sure. I use to have to pick my shot up at the pharmacy and it came with a little pamphlet that specified it may cause weight gain. If you google the depo provera shot, you get lots of info.
Some people dont get a period at all on depo. Some people spot a lot. I was one of the ones that spotted on and off for 5 of the 6 months I was on the shot. The doc told me it would eventually stop but I was tired of it.
I'm not sure about the pain, only thing I use is tylenol.

Thanks Leigha, keep it coming people. As you can imagine NYC has a horrible health care system for the poor, but I never had insurance as a child and that was so much worse, so I can't complain too much.
There is no way I could inject myself. I live alone and there is no one to do it for me so the shot is becoming less of an option then. I'm the type of person that almost faints at the sight of needles. Boy, I'm a pain LOL.
