Default Hair Growth While TTC

Hi everyone! I just had a question for those of you who had or are TTC and have had issues with hirsutism. I will obviously stop my aldactone and BCP treatments while TTC, and my endo says she will take me off my metformin for the duration of pregnancy when we do conceive. However, I'm terrified that the hair will return once I come off the BCP and Aldactone if I don't conceive relatively soon. She says that once the hair is controlled like mine is, metformin treatment while TTC "Might" keep the hair at bay. I personally didn't feel too confident from what she said. I've lost 70 lbs and am trying to lose 18 more to get to my ideal body weight before TTC and I am considering laser treatment to just be rid of the facial hair. What would you guys recommend? I went through hell on earth in gradeschool because of my hirsutism and the fact that I got hazed at school is basically why my PCOS was discovered. I know this is 10 + years ago, but I think I would absolutely die if I had to contend with increased facial hair growth again. I still pluck - I can't imagine what I would look like off the meds. I don't even know if she will let me stay on the metformin if I try to breastfeed. And you can't stay on the BCP while breast feeding, either, can you? I'm sorta freaked out - if anyone has any information or advice I'm open. Thanks!

Get a good men's-type electric razor and get into the habit of shaving every morning. It doesn't take any longer than brushing one's teeth and when you do it every morning you stop thinking about it.

I dunno... shaving blunts the hair shaft making the hair appear thicker and coarser... I guess I'll have to suck it up and spend the money on laser therapy. Seems to be the only alternative. AH well. What can y'do.

If you are going to have laser, you might want to ask your doctor about laser seeing as that you may be pregnant and your hormones may be altered, causing more or less facial growth by itself.

If you get clearance for laser, I wouldn't reccomend an IPL for laser. It temporarily gets rid of the hair but doesn't thin it to elimination. I have found the best laser is the light sheer for elimination and reduction of hair. I have tried an IPL, Coolglide, and Lightsheer and found this one to be the best.

I strongly recommend talking to your doctor before considering the treatments in case you are wasting your money doing it now, while pregnant.

Thanks for the info jc1978! I'm not TTC at the moment, but I'll definitely keep that stuff in mind. My gp owns a laser hair removal clinic so I'll talk with him about the stuff that he offers and see if he has the Light Sheer. Thanks again!

I'm in the same situation as you, NFRN84. I had PCOS in high school but didn't receive treatment until I was 20. I had terrible hair growth and was going for regular electrolysis treatments on my face until I was prescribled BCP and Aldactone to control the hormones. Wow..what a difference the meds made! I finally felt like a "normal" woman and wasn't a slave to the wax every weekend. I wore my hair up and never hesitated to stand close to people..even in the sunlight. Then, after 11 years I quit both meds cold turkey. I don't mean to scare you but its been 2 years since I've been off the bcp and aldactone and yes...the hair did return.. mostly with peach fuzz. I'm back to wearing my hair down to cover my face and avoiding the sun. However, because of the prior electroysis...the growth hasn't been as heavy on my face...my body is another story but laser hair removal is helping with that. I believe that without the meds diet and exercise are really important in keeping things under control. I think that because of our history we are going to be extra self conscious and obsess about every single hair a bit more. Good luck with TTC!!! I hope everything works out for you!

After I lost weight, the hirsutism went away for me. The only time it has come back is when I've put on weight again.

When I got pregnant, my doctor kept me on metformin my whole pregnancy. I gained about 15 lbs throught the whole thing. My Son was 7 lbs 5 oz when he was born. Did your doctor say why she was going to take you off Metformin?

Wow, I thought I was the only one with the excessive hair growth! I never wear my hair up without getting a facial wax first. I got a beard, moustache and sideburns! AND IT IS BLACK HAIR TO TOP IT OFF!

I will never be able to wear a bikini because my hairline says I can't!

I have been doing laser treatment for about 2 yrs and it does work. But still have to keep going back as new hair is breaking through and need to keep up on the maintenance

Full beard growth is not nearly as unusual among women as many people imagine. Ask any family doctor and they'll tell you it's quite common.
