My name is Asmaa and my 13 year old daughter India was recently diagnosed with PCOS. She has many of the "typical" symptoms and is being treated with glucophage to balance her hormones and regulate her period. I do have a concern and am not sure it this has anything to do with her condition. I am aware that excess hair/loss is one of the symptoms, but is loss of the hair of the eyelashes part of that? India has lost the hair on the top of both her eyelashes, right in the middle section where it is most obvious. As soon as they begin to grow back they fall out again. Does anyone know of a treatment I can get for her so that her lashes will grow back and stay? I would prefer natural methods over medical, as her taking one medication is stressful enough for me. I have read that emu and castor oils, when applied to the area where the hair is falling out, can help to regrow it and help it to remain. Any advice is very welcomed.
I've never heard of this with PCOS, but I haven't done much reading on hair loss since it's not one of the symptoms I have.
I did want to say, though, that I think it's great that doctors are recognizing the symptoms and diagnosing girls earlier. I complained to half a dozen doctors about (in retrospect) obvious PCOS symptoms for many years and wasn't diagnosed until I was 24. I know a lot of people on the site, like me, weren't diagnosed until they were in their 20s or 30s. Knowing that there were people like me really helped me to deal with the symptoms. I highly recommend you read some threads on the site which have lots of good information. I know there are a couple of threads by women who know or are concerned about their daughters having PCOS. In addition, there's a teen thread on this site that your daughter might want to join now or when she's a little older so she knows there are other people like her.
hi I wanted to post and let you know that I too have PCOS and eyelash loss. I had my first loss occur at the age of 18. It is strange but my lashloss occured in the exact same spot you have described in your daughter. I have always wondered if it is pcos related but could never find any info regarding this issue. Like your daughter, my lashes grow back but always fall out once they reach a certain length (a very short length, not at all a normal length) I have noticed that when I was pregnant they all grew back to normal levels, but I really don't know the reason why. I have been to an opthamologist about this issue many times, but they too have no clue. I know that it must be something related to pcos but there just isn't enough knowledge yet about pcos in general. By the way, I have hairloss too, and I am not a typical pcos patient. I am tall 5'8" and 135 lbs, and I am borderline diabetic with severe insulin resistance. This disease is so strange in how it affects people. I am still researching my head off to try to find answers. If I find any about the eyelash issue, I will let you know. Please take care and be as supportive as you can for your daughter--she needs it. Also, I use mac fluidline eyeliner and it really disguises the eyelash loss.
Take care

I don't know anything about it, but has she tried fake lashes? I've never used them, but from what I understand some fake lashes can be kept on for days at a time.

I wanted to thank everyone for your feedback, it is all so very helpful for both INdia and myself in dealing with and learning more about PCOS. I really appreciate the feedback from graceunderpressure. I also gave India the information about the teen message board, so hopefully this will be a great help for her. Again, thank you, thank you, thank you.
