Default Hair loss getting worse!

I don't know why my hair keeps thinning so much! My testosterone levels are normal but I do have PCOS. I can see through my scalp at the top near the bangs and have receding on one side at the temples. What do I do?? Do they have any type of hairpiece for the bang area that would look natural.?? My derm. does not think Rogaine will work for me because my hair started thinning so long ago. Also, I do not want to take the chance of having the shed from Rogaine then not getting any growth. I feel like a man. Any bit of wind or humidity completely blows my hair around on top and reveals the "baldness". It is so humiliating. All I do now is go to work and come home. Please give me ideas for cosmetic options. I do not need a wig, just volume at the top.

Hi there -

Well my testosterone levels are "normal" too, but even though they fall within range if they go even mid "normal range" I start to thin out big time.

So I still think antiandrogens are worth a look at, and you never know with rogaine until you try! I know what you mean about fearing the initial shed though. For this reason I haven't started it yet.

There are a ton o cosmetic options out there! Everything from concealers like toppik or dermatch (like make up for your hair and scalp to conceal the thinning) to hair pieces called toppers which are like half wigs that you clip on to the top of your hair. If you get a high quality human hair one, you can't even tell! If you visit heralopecia or wigsupport you can see pics of some awesome solutions.

None will ever replace having your own hair, but there are some great solutions out there that are pretty undetectable if done right and will help you get your life back!

Good luck! I know how much this sucks!

totally feel your pain. i no longer wear my hair down because i'm terrified of people seeing my scalp when my hair moves slightly due to wind etc. it's thinning in the front and on the back. my testosterone level was 91, then i started taking spiro and yaz and now it's 46. over the past 3 months it VERY SLIGHTLY stopped shedding, but still looks thin.

Be careful with extensions they can pull your hair out when you take them out..

Have you had your thyriod levels checked? iron? other vitamins? My test. level was only a little high but my dht was extremely high which is (from what I've read at least) causes the hair loss...

Emu Oil is a dht blocker, you can try applying that to your hair, also make sure your getting enough protien, eating veggies (esp tomatoes & avocados they stimulate hair growth and block dht), whole grains etc., Take a good mulit vitamin (GNC women's ultra mega works best for me), take Biotin (at least 5mg), MSM, silica & get your Omega 3's.. Are you taking an anti-androgen? those can help.. if your worried about side effects there are natural alternatives like spearmint tea & pumpkin seed oil..

I'm so glad to have found this board! I've been crying my eyes out for weeks. My hair won't stop shedding. I have PCOS and it had stopped shedding for 2 years then boom it's coming out in clumps now. It's getting so thin on top. I had my first endo appt. today and she's checking my blood for everything. She told me to try Biotin for stronger hair. My gyno put me on Spiro which made it fall out even more. Was on Metformin for 9 months with no positive results. It's frustrating when doctors don't have the answers.

^Spiro can cause an intial shed in the first three months but that should subside later on.. Also did the hair loss start or get worse on the met? it's a side effect of the medication

I've got a prescription for Met, but among the obvious reasons for being afraid to begin, I don't think I can bear to lose any more hair than I already have. It's growing like the dickens down my back and the sides, but I am completely bald on top, and towards the front. It is a humiliating experience going to the salon, but my hairdresser tries to cover it up so I'm not exposed to all the other clients and hairdressers. She's a miracle worker, but it's wearing down my confidence and I am growing sick of crying my eyes out on an almost daily basis. I am not dating and it scares me to death thinking about how I would explain why the entire top of my head of hair is not grouwing out of my scalp (if I've got a receipt, it's mine!). There's got to be a better way.

I have been dealing with this same thing recently, over the last few months...like 3 or maybe 4, my hair is just falling out, I can see my scalp if I do anything with it....so I haven't been, and it looks flat, undone. My hair dresser told me to try Nioxin vitamins, which I am thinking about doing...just scared to take anything, in fear of it getting worse. My scalp itches and tingles right now too. It could be nerves....I don't know, but it's scary, because I used to have thick natural curly hair, and now it's flat...thin....hair.
