Default I know what you are going through....

I had the same problem. The loss of hair can be worse on self esteem than the weight gain. I, too, had beautiful hair prior to the loss. I would loose hand fulls every day in the shower, running my fingers through my hair, or brushing. I had/have male pattern balding. I decided to cut it off (all of it) last year. I was officially diagnosed in September of 05 with PCOS which answered a lot of my questions including the hair loss. My doctor changed my bc to Yasmin and prescribed Metformin 1000mg/day. After about a month or so, I started noticing a reduction in hair loss and increase in growth. I just might be becoming a woman again! I am trying to grow my hair out again. Even my husband, who is a typical male doesn't notice much about hair and things of the sort, even noticed my hair change! I am excited! I have began buying cute clips and things for my hair again. I have enough now!

So, keep your head up! These new meds will help! Also, remember your multivitamins. They are so important to include with your every day pharmacy of meds.

Good luck!

Honestly, I have not noticed any hair growth with metformin. I too am feeling sick about my hairloss. I looked yesterday at the top of my head with a mirror in my grandma's bathroom with excellent lighting and noticed I could see my scalp all over the top of my head. I began to cry and it is truly devastating. I tried to deny it for so long! I cant any more and I dont know what to do, but all I can tell you is that in my situation, met did not work!

I am thinking about going back to my endo and getting spiro or an uppage of met.

This has been my latest depression if you have seen my posts..my hair has been falling out disgustingly, and I have always been known for my hair. People get mad if I cut it, I would get stopped by random people just with compliments..and now that being one of my only good self esteem points is being lost I can see my scalp if I bend down and its so much thinner now. I am seriously contimplating cutting it really short, but I look horrible with short hair, I dont have the face for it..I've been taking large doses of vitamins and herbs that benefit hair growth, using Nioxin still and trying to never blow dry it. My scalp is burning all the time, I have this constant nervous lump in my stomach all the time because of the fear of just losing all my hair. I try not to think about it but it's easier said then done, and when I do it just raises my stress level so much higher making it worse. I don't know what to do anymore either, I have another Endo appt on the 6th so hopefully I will get some sort of help then..or else I may go crazy.

I have a balding area on top just like men in the bangs area and it was getting worse. It was getting to the point to where I was going to start wearing hats because it was starting to get embarrassing. I went to a dermatologist and he suggested Men's Rogaine extra strength and by golly it's working. My hair's getting a little thicker up there but not completely full. I can live it with the way it looks now vs before. I also use T gel dandruff shampoo suggested by him as well. My friend recommended a shampoo called Nioxin I think it is that helps grow hair and is found in beauty supply stores. I haven't bought this yet as I still have some of the other shampoo in samples given to me by the dermatologist.

Jeanette, did you experience a rogaine "shed" until the new hair started to grow again? How much of hte hair actually thickened or grew back, and what areas? I have male-pattern, receding on sides but thinning in the middle now too, and derm suggested Rogaine. I am desperate at this point; met didn't help (made worse), spiro didn't regrow any, plus ttc now & can't take meds.

Yeah, that's what I'm afraid of. The dread shed. Dumb derm told me it "couldn't" happen but even the pamphlet says so! I cant' believe my old RE actually recommended this lady (actually, I can, knowing my ex-RE better now); I waited 6 months to hear the same crap I coulda heard from the PA down the street on a walk-in appointment!

The past 3 months I've gained about 5-7 lb (after losing for almost 2 years) and my hair has been shedding again, bad. Coincidence? Something is going on, probably this damn cyst--I'm checking that out Mon.

Amy - I've been on Met for a year & it hasn't helped. I've read some people experience hair loss while on Met, because it could cause a b-vitamin deficiency. Don't worry, just take a good b-vitamin pill & that should take care of it.

There are many things you can try - Minoxidil, Nizoral, Nioxin, Saw Palmetto, bcps. There's a thread on here about essential oils. If you want to you can try Propecia or Flutamide - there are possible side effects & you can't get pregnant while you take it. Also it might be hard to get a doctor to prescribe it. I'm desperate enough to try it.

I like Dr. Redmond's website - hormonehelpny.com. I like his attitude & it's comforting to read his articles. Check it out.

Go to a derm & get your testosterone levels tested. Plus they will run other tests to find out what's up. Whatever you decide, try one thing at a time. I know it's tempting to try everything at once, but then you won't know what works & what doesn't.

No other symptom of PCOS has depressed me as much as hair loss. It sucks.

My Derm denied the dread shed too so when I was going through it (it was HORRENDOUS) hairs all over hte place .... he gave me injections that cost me an extra £120 a time which were supposed to halt the loss !!! it didnt !!! .....

I have been on proscar for a year that has not helped, and I am TRYING to get my doctor to put me on Flutamide but he has been a total waste of space... my loss is never less than 250 hairs a day !!
