My Mood: Points: 7,183.41 Bank: 18,508.19 Total Points: 25,691.60 | Hair Loss Pictures Seeing as there is a thread about excess hair growth pictures. I decided to start one about hair loss!
I have really struggled with dealing with this in the past. At the moment it's not too bad, but over the past few years it has been so bad that I have been unable to go outside in the sun without sharp searing pain like someone sticking needles in your scalp (I would imagine haha) because I had no hair to protect my scalp. For a while I also took to wearing headscarves, bandanas and hats because I felt very low about my self-image. I can disguise it a bit by parting my hair different ways according to the balding bits. I also have had all my previously lovely long locks cut off so it's a bob-length cut now.
Now I deal with it better. I was at an interview for my current job and caught one of the interviewers staring at my then bald patch. After she hired me and I visited the office for some training I explained about the PCOS and my bald patch to her... I still feel sad that my hair is half the thickness it used to be and that I have thinning patches and sometimes bald patches, but life is short and there is nothing I can do about it/it's not my fault. Maybe one day when I am financially better off I will go to ScaredSally's lady and get some extensions done.

I guess I must have a sensitive scalp or something.
Squidge - I can see what you mean... your hairloss/thinning is patchy like mine. Mine looks fine from the front when you look straight at my face, but then if I bend my head slightly down you can really see it. The back (below the crown) of my head has quite a lot of hair in comparison to the top and if I run my hands through it it feels quite good... that probably sounds weird.
My hair type has actually changed... it used to be medium thickness, but now some strands are like baby fine hair, some are wirey and some are just as they used to be. My hairdressers have never been able to figure that out! Plus I have a few curly hairs that have appeared since my hair started falling out.

Vicky-Louise | Vicky-Louise, this is completely typical of AGA hair loss. Completely. If the AGA advances a lot, you might also find that the baby fine and/or wirey hairs also don't grow very long. They are replacing the normal healthy hairs.

When you have your extensions in, how does your hair look? Does it look really full? I have considered having them in the past - but never been able to afford it, though that might change as my job situation changes. I would do it to get thicker hair. I find that because I have such a thinned out parting - my hair is very flat against my head rather than like curving up and away from the head (if that makes sense). I think that it also depends on how my balding patches go. I mean if they get worse I would have to rethink...
I go through phases of being totally fine about it and then there are other days when I feel very down about it. I mean sometimes I catch people staring at it and it makes me feel really uncomfortable. Having said that, I am trying to get my mind around the fact that this happening to me is not my fault. If my body chooses to do this, why should I feel bad? Yet, a lot of the time I have done.

However, if you do get extensions then I hope they make you feel wonderful - its all about how YOU feel at the end of the day innit?
I have heard that they can actually put your real hair out too and some people end up with random bald patched from them, but from what I've seen, extensions can look amazing when they are done right.
big hugs Vlal, you're a great gal!

Pardon my ignorance, but what is AGA hair loss?
I am having the same problems. It's awful, and it's so depressing.... |

Androgenetic Alopecia
Androgenetic alopecia (AGA), or male-pattern baldness, is hair thinning in an "M"-shaped pattern; hair loss occurs on the temples and crown of the head with sparing of the sides and back5 (Figure 2). This pattern reflects the distribution of androgen-sensitive follicles in most people.6 Starting at puberty, androgens shorten the anagen phase and promote follicular miniaturization, leading to vellus- like hair formation and gradual hair thinning.
Women also may experience AGA, often with thinning in the central and frontal scalp area but usually without frontal*temporal recession (Figure 3). A history and physical examination aimed at detecting conditions of hyperandrogenism, such as hirsutism, ovarian abnormalities, menstrual irregularities, acne, and infertility are indicated. Laboratory tests are of little value in women with AGA who do not have characteristics of hyperandrogenism.5 http://www.aafp.org/afp/20030701/93.html

I have heard that too... about the extensions and balding or ruining the hair they have. I guess it depends on where you go etc. It does kinda put me off!! It's hard work being a laydeee lol
I have to say, I have increasingly noticed women with this type of hairloss around and about - I wonder if it's an increase in PCOS or else linked to stress (or both). I also have M.E. and I am sure that my body is in meltdown as I am physically overdoing it (working too hard to try and earn a crust) so I think that may be why my hairloss is getting worse at the moment. It does tend to go through really bad phases and then slow down. I had one point a couple of years ago where I had so little hair on my head that when I went to the hairdresser and they pulled my hair up to cut it (you know for a layer or whatever) a. you could just see my scalp/shape of my head shining back at you and b. they could cut the whole head of hair in about 2 minutes lol. It was quite demoralising at the time as I was virtually housebound and that experience just made me feel worse, though I can laugh about it now - I mean the hairdresser got paid £40 for about 2 minutes work!!

I had a hair transplant procedure done about two years ago, and it's great. It really fills in the sparser spots.
My hair is okay now, but I'd like it even thicker, so I would like to go in for another procedure. It's about $4,000 though, which I can't swing right now, so I'll have to wait. But I want it so badly now!! |

I have to keep my hair in a short bob, my hair is very oily (should wash twice a day but dont because of fear that more would fall out), baby thin, and when I go out I should put suntan lotion in hair! I have been recently diagnosed with PCOS and am not on medication because I see the endo on Wednesday. After taking medication for PCOS does your hair begin to grow or at least thicken? |
