This syndrome is so weird. I'm a weird case of this where I have no hirsutism, and I'm really thin, but irregular periods and had to take met to get pregnant. Lately I've been concerned about hair loss, which has led me to post all kinds of stuff and freak out. But here's my question: where does the hair loss happen? After my first week on Yaz, my shed has pretty much stopped, and while my hair has seriously thinned out since I was a teenager, I'm not losing it at the crown: I'm losing it at the sides! Is this weird? My derm said he thinks it's androgenic and due to PCOS, but another friend of mine who's a MD told me to get a second opinion. I just don't want to lose anymore hair and go bald
Iam the same as you thin, hardly any body hair (well it is manageable), no periods though and I have androgen gentic alopecia (AGA) this varies from person to person I have diffuse loss, and a receeding hairline and temporal loss ... as we have PCOS we have elevated androgens and you and me have it so it affects our heads ! in PCOS hair loss resembles either diffuse thinning or more often a male pattern rather than classic female pattern which is widening of the parting.
I wear extensions now (LOADS) without them I have hardly any hair at all on the sides of my head although a fair bit at the back
I have tried so many "treatments" and had no success. I am so sory that you are going through this trauma it has been a horrific ride so far.xx

Yeah, this is awful. I have low iron so that's not helping things either. I've been told you cannot tell, but I can't really put my hair back anymore since it's so thin at the sides! And I just don't trust aldactone for the long term. Ugh. I'd rather deal with excess body hair than this.... I will tell you that I had loads of hair when I was pregnant, so if you have a baby, you might find all of a sudden having more hair. This is all very recent-my hair "thinned" out after having a baby, but after the first week of Yaz is when I noticed how very thin I've gotten.
I have curly hair, though, so I can at least fluff it out.
I have excessive amounts of hair loss, but very little exessive hair growth. I have pcos and am hypothyroid so which problem is causing the extreme hair loss. My levothyroxin prescription says that hair loss is a side effect of the medicine, although I know hair loss is also a side effect of the hypothyroidism also. I did not even know you could have hair loss if you was PCOS. I guess with hypothyroidism and PCOS im in a no win win situation!

I'm not quite clear what you mean when you say that you're losing it at the sides.
As Sally has said, with PCOS there are usually high testosterone levels so the hair loss pattern is usually "male" rather than "female" which means that the loss usually starts at the temples which means that it retreats from the front but not in the middle, rather in large V shapes on either side from the front with the V pointing towards the back. Receding usually takes place there long before loss on the crown is all that obvious.
Few of us exhibit all the symptoms to the same extent that males do, but in general terms we can expect to have some of the same hair growth and hair loss patterns as males do. In my case it's moustache and beard growth and body hair to almost the same extent as a male would have it, and limited hair loss from the temples which is not really a problem for me yet.
