Well about three years ago I would come to this site literally everday so depressed and desperate. My hair loss was bad. I finally went to hair club for men - they call it hair club for men AND women now. My brother had cancer and after that his hair just didnt grow back so he was self conscious and one day he asked me to go with him to check it out - I regained my life the day that I joined hair club. And get this - I met my current husband before I got it done - so I know he really loves me. I also never thought I would ever get married due to all these pcos problems - but miracles happen. I am now trying to get pregnant - and I know that miracles do happen. If anyone wants to know more about hair club just reply and I will check back in here. It is not perfect in every regard but it is the best solution I have found. They put real human hair on your head and you wash it in the shower just like as if it was yours - I feel like I dont want anyone to know about it for some reason - just because I feel I have the world fooled - but I know I am safe here and I have been helped so much by others that I thought I would share.
I would LOVE some information on the hair club! I'm 25 and am experiencing a lot of hair loss. It started when I was a teen, but has recently gotten much worse. It's really noticable because I have coarse black hair... Very depressing.
Ok so let me start by saying that I prayed and prayed that God would let my hair grow back - I was in my sisters wedding and the pictures just made my heart sink. I could not even have my hair put up because it made it look worse! So then I realized God was answering my prayer just not in the way I had first imagined (letting my hair grow back). It was very scary doing it for the first time -and I probably wouldnt have if my brother hadnt been sitting next to me saying that I really had to do it and it took awhile to adjust to it but now I feel like it is my hair and I cant even feel anything different on my head. I would first make an appointment with a hair club in your area - you can find it on the web http://www.hairclubformen.com/ and have a free consultation. I was lucky to be able to meet in person with a female client and she let me touch it and what not so then I was sold. But basically what they do is if you have any of your own hair they leave it on your head. I was bald like a man so the top of my head was BAD. So what they did was they shaved that area where my hair was thin (you dont have to shave it if you dont want to). They they custom fit a sort of matrix to fit where they shave you. Someone somewhere sews the hair into the matrix. The matrix is very thin and if someone was looking at your head it looks like scalp. They make a head of real human hair for you and match it to your hair. Then basically they glue this thing on - but it is like medical sticky stuff - cant really explain it but you cant feel it. Then you have your full head of hair and you wash it, curl it, style it,etc. just like real hair. There are all different "plans" you can pick - the one I am on costs 3000 per year but to me it is worth it. My husband and I feel it is important because of how I feel. Since I got this done, I feel so confident going places and I am now in graduate school and I just feel that my professional career is so much better with my confidence. Like I said it isnt perfect. You have to go in every so often and get it adjusted and also since it is real hair you have to get new hair and things like that. And YOU know it is there - but let me tell you - when I first got it done - NO ONE knew. About a year later my other brother came up to me (since he is balding but not as much as I was) and he thought I just went to a regular hair place that made my hair look a little thicker. I had met my husband before having it done and the day I had it done he just kept saying I looked so good then about 3 months later I told him and he had NO IDEA!! He just thought I looked prettier somehow. Anyway, but I would encourage you to go in for a free consultation in your area - there are MANY women who do it. If it is right for you something in your heart will feel it. I just knew that after so many years of trying to grow my hair back that it wasnt going to happen for me and once I faced that and realized that I NEEDED to do something - and I refused to wear a wig - it was the best option for me. GOOD LUCK. Feel free to ask more questions if you need to or if you need emotional support because I know how it feels.
Barring propecia or dutasteride, I am going to look into wigs myself soon...I actually found a "wiglet" (bangs) that I may order, because that's mainly where I lost hair, is the front.

Sadie - what types of plans are there? I mean, is it a matter of how much area needs to be covered? Do you know if there's a payment plan? How long does the hair last before you need to get a new one made?
guineapig - What's this wiglet?

I understood it to be, in a nutshell, "bangs" on a very thin headband. That's where I've lost most of my hair, the front & temples, so I thought that might work. I saw the ad in a magazine, and the bangs are off hairuwear.com I'd have to look up the exact link. I have no idea how much it is, and of course, you couldn't swim/sleep with it on very easily. But for work, school, dates...hey, it might work! Or if you are the type (I used to) that gets bangs cut every other year, hates them a month later, and starts the awful bang-growin phase, you could wear them for fun/special occasions. ?? Cheaper than a hair transplant I'd imagine, although someday that's on my list.

Hm...I think I'm looking for something a bit more permanent. (well, something I can sleep, shower, etc with) The hair club thing sounds like a good idea, but I can't exactly afford that. There are also places that attach something like 4 hairs to each of your hairs. I'd just be worried that the extra weight might make my own natural hair fall out more easily.
At this point I'm considering putting waterproof mascara on all my little colorless fuzzies. :o I know it sounds ridiculous, but I'm kinda getting desperate. Heck I'd even thought about shading in a bit with an eyebrow pencil. So frustrating...
See I was told that hair transplant was not an option for me - do you think it is in general an option for us? For now my hair club is definitely the best option for me.
I'm not sure how they attach fake hairs to your own hair, but I'm pretty sure it's not surgical.
I was also told that I wouldn't be a good candidate for a transplant. (however, I was also told this by a doctor that didn't run any tests until I basically demanded them...he was pretty incompetent IMO)
The hair club things sounds great. There isn't one here though, but I suppose I could go to Washington for it. There is a DuBrule here though, and I'm starting to really consider it. I want my confidence back. I'm just worried about how much it costs.
In a hair transplant, they cut a strip(s) of your own hair from a "dense" area, skin and all, and remove the hairs & follicles under a microscope and implant them in the sparse areas (kind of like digging a teeny hole for a teeny flower). Then they grow, supposedly, as your own hair et all. You have to have a fair amount hair in order to "harvest" for the move/transplant, and depending on that is how much hair you can "regrow." The thicker the remaining hair, the more area or the thicker-density you can replant/regrow. Me, I look like a man Norwood 2-3 and the bottom-back of my hair is still so thick & unruly that my hair looks like a mushroom 99% of the time. Except the bald-*ss front! And my very top is kind of thin too. Shaving a few strips out from the back/bottom shouldn't hurt it too much. Oh, and sometimes men have trouble finding places to get the follicle strips scalped from b/c it leaves a vicious scar and men have short hair, you know, they can't cover the scar up like a woman. Does all this make sense? Women, they say, in general don't make great hair transplant candidates because USUALLY our hair loss is so diffuse. It's USUALLY thin all over, which is very difficult to implant hairs into to make it look thicker, and difficult to find an area to take the strips of follicles from. But mine is male-patterned, with a mushroom, so I look forward to getting it done someday...except for the ouch factor!

My hairloss is diffuse, but even thinner at the front/top. This doctor that I saw said that my hair is "programmed" to fall out anyways, so it wouldn't do any good to do a transplant. Of course, he was kind of a dope. I don't really trust him. But anyways, I'm not sure what I'm going to do....I'm still hoping my hair will get thicker.
