I too have been losing lot's of hair over the last 4yrs, ever since I began taking BCP's, Ortho-Tri for 3yrs and change, then my doctor switched to me Yasmin which didnt help. The thing is that not only am I losing hair, but I any re-growth has a VERY different texture from the rest of my hair, does anyone else have this problem? It almost feels like the consistency of pubic hair, very rough and ridgety. Also, many times I have an achey scalp and have noticed some major flaking happening also. I think the BCP's may have triggered the loss. I'm going to see my doctor on Friday and demand a hormone test to test all male hormones, to see if it's Androgenic Alopecia (which is what I think it is). I've also read that there are many more medical options for men than for woman, because some medication is harmful to pregnant woman, but if your not pregnant or not planning to be anytime soon, and on BCP's wouldnt it be ok to be put on something like Propecia? Any suggestions on treatments would be helpful medical, topical or herbal. I'm a total NEWBIE, please help.
Hi emmy;
I had been on birth control for two years, and I didn't notice any change with my hair, but once the ob-gyn switched me to Yasmin, I had hair falling out in clumps. After three months I stopped Yasmin, and i don't take BCP's now. My hair is alot better, my beautician has really helped me with conditioners and giving me advice on the best shampoos. I hope that this helps a little bit.
Good luck,
Jenny
I read up on Propecia too and it did say not to be used in pregnant women or woman who could become pregnant. I'm trying to figure out if it can be used in women if they're not going to become pregnant.
Propecia, like Rogaine and Minoxidil, is only effective as long as you continue to use it. Any hair grown while using it will go away within a few months of discontinuing use.
This is why dr.'s usually prescribe Aldactone (spironolactone) for women because it has not been linked to birth defects (although it is contraindicated during pregnancy, not sure how long you have to be off of it before conceiving).
Dosage of Aldactone is 100-200mg/day

WHEN YOU SAY YOUR ALOPICIA HAS IMPROVED. DO YOU MEAN THAT YOUR HAIR STARTED TO GROW BACK OF DID IT STOP FALLING? i HAVE VERY TINY HAIRS POPPING UP IS THAT GOOD OR IS IT PART OF THE ALOPICA? HOW LONG DID YOUR HAIR FALL OUT FOR. DO YOU THINK IT WAS THE SPIRO THAT HELPED?
In my opinion, the short hairs that do not lay flat with the rest of my hair is not new growth, but just existing hair that became broken due to combing, blowdrying, etc.
I've found that my shedding has decreased so much to less than 10 or 15 hairs a day (compared to 100) but no new growth in sight!
