i'm new to this, so i was reading different posts and websites saying women experienced hair loss on metformin. i'm already losing my hair and it won't grow, and i may go on metformin at the end of the month. how many of you experience this? what were you experiences on metformin? how did it effect your life for the better? what symptoms got better and what got worse? thanks!
HI, I too am very worried about this possible side effect. I have naturally thin/fine hair so any loss would be noticeable. Anyone have any experiences either way?
Please help to ease our worrying.

I didn't have any huge balding or anything..just lost my hair in huge clumps all the time. After about a year or so on the met (when my hormone labs started to normalize), I saw a marked difference in the amount of hair I lost. I lose normal amounts of hair when I brush my hair or shower, but no more of that nasty hair loss.
I have never heard anything about met CAUSING hairloss...only the insulin resistance that PCOS'ers have causing it. Met tends to make that aspect better because it improves our insulin.
Hope it helps!

Met helps IR and tends to improve hair loss issues, so I wouldn't hesitate to give it a try...it's worked well for me.

My hair was falling out for a bit but I think it was do to a sudden large weightloss and my hormones shifting around. It seems to have gone back to normal now and I've been on met (regularly) for a bit over 6 months now.

I have heard of women having hair loss worsen or start after starting the met. I think I have 2 theories...
1. Coindicence
2. Met can decrease absorption of B vitamins and perhaps this can cause/worsen hair loss? Biotin is a B vitamin and one of the ones suggested if hair loss is a problem. I would suggest, if taking met, to consider taking a B supplement on top of a regular daily mulit-vite or prenatal - but at different times of the day... You can't really over-do B vitamins, you will just pee out the extra because they are water soluable. (Don't just take 2 daily mulit-vites because then you will be over doing vitamins that you can over do, fat soluable ones...)
Like Christy said, PCOS and IR cause hair loss...
Seems like when I went on met, my hair loss stopped... for quite a while, over a year. Then for whatever reason, met stopped working for me and it picked up again. I don't know what to make of it. I am taking met and avandia and I don't blame either of those... I blame the PCOS which is not yet completely under control so now I am trying to exercise more to whack it in to line better...

oh wow, i hope it helps with me. i take multi-vitamins every day anyway.. and ive always taken good care of my hair but it wont stop falling out and it will not grow!
I'm so confused right now, about what could be causing my possible hair loss, cuz I've read so many things. For one, I read that it is common to suffer hair loss is you constantly wear your hair in a tight ponytail or braids (which I did, daily) So it got me thinking that possibly the hair loss could be from that, so I have stopped putting my hair in pony tails. I also read it could take up to 3 months or more to see a marked difference. Then I read that taking birth control pills with higher androgen levels can also cause hair loss and that you should try a pill with lower levels, so I am now on Jasmine. Then I read that depending on your body, sometimes you need higher androgen levels to prevent the hair loss. Then of course you have people that say it's also hereditary or that if you dyed your hair a lot through the course of your life that could also lead to hair loss. So I just hope I'm doing everything right. I'm dieting, taking multivitamin and calcium supplement, am on Met 1000mg, and no longer dye or wear my hair in tight ponytails like I use to do everyday. I will say that I my hair doesn't seem to fall out in clumps anymore. I don't find tons of hair on my pillow or my clothes anymore, so I think the greater hair loss has stopped, but I just hope it's growing back. Kinda hard to tell. Any more suggestions on what I can do? I heard taking additional B vitamin is good, the vitamin I take now has 100 of both B6 and B12.
I don't think I ever really noticed any hair loss before taking the Met. I'm hoping it's just because my body is trying to get things balanced. I've messed around with the dosage, though, so I'm sure that didn't help. I'm now trying to keep things consistent (with the dosage of Met and following the IR diet) to see if my body responds positively.
Hypothyroidism (which many cysters have) and anemia also cause hair loss.
My hair began falling out when I was around 16 years old. I started taking Met in October and just yesterday DH and I noticed that I have little hairs, about an inch long, popping out all over my head. YAY for MET!

Congrats on your new hair growth!!
I didn't know about anemia causing hair loss. I'm actually low in iron and B-12 now that I'm on Metformin. I should be more diligent with taking my iron pills. Thanks for mentioning this.
So, should I be on an iron supplement, or additional B12? I think I have been noticing some hair growth too, it's like shorter hairs along my scalp line and crown and forehead, just hoping it is new and not there from before.
Met can zap B-12, so it's a good idea to take it. As far as iron, have you tested anemic? I wouldn't take iron without knowing that it is low, because you can have iron overload and that's not a good thing.
