I thought I'd put this here because to me this is a big problem! :0)
Anway, I don't have a huge problem with hair but there are somedays where I notice it more then others. I get hair where normal women get hair and a razor helps (thank God at least THAT makes me feel like a normal woman)...however I have been noticing more hair on my face especially on my chin and neck (YUCK)...how do you get rid of it...I obviously don't want to use a razor but if I have no other options then I just might....thought I'd check here fist tho...

Hey there! I see you are from Illinois. Me too. Very southern tip here. Ok, on with a reply to your question. Well, I have alot of hair on my upper lip and my chin. When I first got diagnosed with PCOS (Sep 2004), it wasn't as bad, but it got worse over the years. The tecniques I have used is waxing (you can buy these wax strips that you rub together to heat up at walmart, they are made by Sally Hansen. Waxing is painful and can cause irritation!), tweezing (also painful, and you pretty well have to do this everyday), and I also have this thing that looks like an ink pen, but it is a little shaver thing, it works but not really great. What I have been using lately, and I absolutely love it, is called Smooth Away. It is these little pad things that stick on to these little rubber things and you rub it on your face or legs and it really works for me. I got the kit at Walgreens for 10 buck. It has helped out alot, but I also have to do this everyday as well. Lot's of crap to keep from looking like a man! It sucks to have hair in places a woman shouldn't have hair!

I was just saying this on another thread here. I have mild pcos symptoms where my extra hair was confined to my chin and upper lip. It wasnt a lot, but it was enough to bother me. At first I plucked my chin and used a cream to remove the hair on my lip. I did that for 15 years. The problem with plucking, is that I had to do it everyday, it left my skin irritated and red, and I got ingrown hairs which then caused acne. Its a vicious cycle.
When I had enough of it, I decided to spend the money and do laser hair removal. Yes, it was expensive, but it was the best money I've ever spent. I started the treatments at the age of 30, I've had a total of 5 so far and my skin is so smooth its unbelievable. However, if you choose to go this route, you wont be able to do anything to the hair except shave it. Shaving actually was a road I had never attempted to go down. For me, it just seemed odd and I thought that if I did it, more hair would grow. That wasnt the case at all. I can tell you, that if I had known how much easier shaving was and how well it kept my skin looking (compared to plucking), I would have shaved all along!
So if you find that the other options just dont work for you, try shaving. It wont change the way your current hair growth is or create new hair. And if you can afford to, my suggestion would be laser hair removal. I had my lip and chin done for about $650-$700 and the place that I go to, does free touch ups for life.

There's absolutely no reason not to use a razor. But do try a men's-type electric razor which is designed for the face.

I'm so glad someone tried the Smooth Away...I had seen the infomercials, but didn't want to buy it unless I knew it was going to work. So after reading this thread the other day I had to stop into Walgreens and grabbed it. I haven't done it on my legs yet, I just did my upper lip b/c that's the area that really really bothers me, and I CAN"T BELIEVE IT. The hair is gone. Totally gone. I don't know how long it will last yet, and I wonder how to get refill bad things b/c it took one just to do my lip and it seems to be dull already, but it was amazing. I have struggled with bleaches and waxes for years and this was so exciting. I know I have a pretty high pain thresh-hold, but I didn't think it was that rough on my face. I mean, I wouldn't do it just for kicks, but it wasn't painful.
I would like to look into LHR eventually, but in the meantime, this is quite a lovely little trick
Thanks ladies for trying it first!

Not sure if anyone else had this, but I've still only used the Smooth Away the one time on my upper lip/chin and now I've started breaking out in the areas I used it...
Anyone else notice that?

I'm glad you tried the Smooth Away..I love this little gadget. When I first used it I did notice some break outs. That's the only down side. And I have to use it everyday..that's another bummer, but as long as it works..I don't mind. Oh yeah, the refills..this is what sucks. I had to buy a whole new smooth away system because I can not find just the refills. I wonder if going to the smooth away website would do any good? I may try that. I will let you know if I can find any refills.

I just recently got a men's Norelco Speed XL electric shaver, and I've been using it on my chin, neck area... smooth as a baby's bottom, and no razor bumps! :o I totally recommend it.

I learned to shave like a man from reading an article in GQ.
In the shower with a razor and gel. There's a trick to it, but it's easy to do and the results last longer than a shave from an electric razor.
Buy a good razor with replaceable blades and replace the blade at least once a week if you have a lot of hair, you can go to weeks if you don't have a lot... don't use a cheap disposable. Three blades are best because you're less likely to cut yourself.
Use gel rather than foam and plenty of it.
First shave in the direction the hair grows so that you aren't lifting up the hairs and shaving off skin with them -- that can give you a nasty rash.
Then gel up again and shave in the opposite direction to cut the hairs even closer to the skin. If you can still feel the hairs with your finger tips gently shave the area again. When it all feels smooth rinse and finish your shower.
Once you get used to doing it, it takes less than two minutes and lasts until the next morning on even heavy dark hairs.
I also keep a good men's battery powered travel razor for when I go camping... then I can go off for an early morning constitutional with a shovel and a roll of toilet paper (and razor tucked away in a jacket pocket). To be used for their intended purposes out of sight and hearing of the camp. There's little you don't learn about your friends when you share a tent and a canoe for a week, but some things must remain private.
