Talking Hair Removal - UK & Irish Fashion!

Having spent a while in front of the depilation section of Boots yesterday and about an hour removing hair from my legs this morning I thought it would be helpful to some of us, to find out from others here in the UK and Ireland just what products work well, what others didn't like how other cysters deal with the hair problem. If we get informative responses I'll make this a sticky. Often I find that when I look in the hair forum I just see products mentioned that we can't get here, so if there's stuff that works for you please post it here!

I must say that right now the hair thing is getting me down. I feel it's getting worse and I really don't know what to do to deal with it.

I don't want to go down the drugs route just now as we will be ttc later this year, so it leaves me with the tedious hair removal methods that we all know and hate.

Methods I use:

Shaving
Legs, usually just below the knee, that's all that's ever seen, in fact not much above my ankle is ever on public display.
Also upper lip, I hate doing this but don't know what the other options are without actually letting it grow back, which is too hideous to contemplate.
Underarms, I once used the epilator there and it was agony, so now I shave all the time.

Wax
Legs, above the knee and bikini line. I occasionally shave there, but find that too irritating. I used two whole packs of Veet strips on this area this morning. Grim.

Epilator
Legs, tidy up the missed bits after waxing.
Belly
Chin

Tweezers

Chin
Breasts

Boy I must look delightful eh!??

Normally I just use soap to shave with, but yesterday I bought a product called "King of Shaves Woman" so I'll see what that does, if it's good I'll let you know!

Other new things I'm trying are Jolen Hair minising cream. I was thinking of getting the Johnston's one that's been advertised when I saw this and thought that since they do the bleach they nmay know a bit more about hair! (Scientific eh?) Again, I'll post what I find.

I also recently bought a home electrolysis kit, which I've not been very diligent with so I can't say I've noticed any grat results, but I will try to use it more frequently and see if it makes a difference. I especially want to make a difference to my face, but the pads are so small.

Things I've tried in thepast, but can't really recommend are Surgi Facial Hair Stop, I didn't notice much difference.

I haven't used removal creams since I was in my teens, but if someone can sell it to me since I'm sure they are a bit more up to date and less smelly I would give it a go again.

So, please share your methods. Thanks, if you got his far!!!

HI Deeds

((hugs)) know what you mean about the hair!!

I 'shave' mine as my skin is too sensitive to the creamy nair, immac, etc. type things

I've seen the king of shaves stuff, but haven't bought it, so I'd love to hear what you think of it.

Also, have you seen the new intuition razor (I think)? Have you tried that? Im still on the gilette mach3.

btw - I had a leaflet through the door last week, to say that 'Superdrug' have new half price offers on, and I noticed that the Johnsons hair minimizing lotion is half price as £3.

Speak to you soon

hi there

right..legs upto the top, i shave(i have to, go right up, otherwise i look like my dh, all pubicky!!

upper lip, moles on face...i had electrolosys for about a year, every week, a few years back, so hair on my face is quite minimal, fine, and scattered, so maybe once a month, i wax my lip, and every so often pluck the mole hairs(they dont come in very often).

I only get maybe 2 hairs on, one of my breasts, so i pluck them to little sods every now and then!

armpits...since having skin tags removed i shave,.....b4 used removal cream!

i had never touched the hair on my belly, until i was pregnant, then i became really embarrased about it, what with mid-wife etc.poking about...so near the end of prganancy, (birth looming). i got dh to wax them, and since then they arent too bad, few and far between!!

sorry, babbling on here, hope that all makes sense

Hi deeds!

i don't 'think' I suffer too badly with the hair but because i am very dark haired, I expect hair to show more, generally.

I have just recently got the tweezers on my upper lip. This one is definitely hormonal because when I am on the pill it is OK but since coming off the pill 7 months ago to ttc it has come back So I am managing to have a go at it with the tweezers every few days and am hoping that gradually the hairs will become less (yeah riight!!).

I HAVE tried the new 'Intuition' razor (it was on offer half price at Boots) and I like it a lot. I like it because if you have to shave your legs quite often then it becomes a bit of a chore getting the shaving gel out, then the shower rinsing it all off and having to start again etc. This has a block of cream around the blade so you don't use the gel at all and I just find it REALLY quick!

Hope this helps a little.

Sorry I haven't been adventurous enough to try anything of much use I'm a bit of a chicken.

Take care.

Andrea.

P.S. looks like we'll be ttc no.2 together too

Ha ha! I see the avent cup now LOL. Mind you to have produced a gorgeous young man like Kian you must be pretty stunning yourself Gina.

Andrea, we're not ttc yet, well not officially, we're not preventing, but not actively trying. I suppose I'm forever hopeful that an "accident" will happen! Unlikely, but who knows. If nothing happens by the end of the year I'm going to see about going on Clomid again.

BTW, tweezers on your top lip has got to HURT!!!

Default Converted epilator here

Hi gals,

I've been using an epilator on my lower legs since last September. I'm not brave enough to go anywhere else with it because of how much I think it will hurt, but having said that doing my legs now doesn't hurt as much as that first time in September.

I find I don't get the same smoothness as I did from a shave but the hairs have DEFINITELY become less noticeable until there are too many of them not to notice!!! Anyone got any advice about preventing or minimising ingrown hairs after epilating - I get BILLIONS?!?!?!?!

I also started using the Johnson's Hair Minimising Body Lotion. It was either £3.99 or £4.99 from Boots, so when the Superdrug price goes back upto normal, Boots will be cheaper. I used Boots Advantage points, so my first bottle was essentially free!! It doesn't smell horrible, but it's not exactly yummy either, so have a sniff before you buy any, and if you do get some, go easy, a little bit goes quite a long way!!!!

I still shave my underarms, but I've recently developed a new tag on the left one, so I am very wary until I go to the docs on the 12th for my next Depo jab. Other hairs like chin, jawline and sometimes my belly, I get the tweezers to 'em. I'm lucky that I only have six or seven specific sites where I get really big thick hairs on my face, and they come out easily when they've only just broken through the skin. No-one sees my belly except DH, so I don't worry too much about the ones around my belly button - I have a freakish button anway, because I still had a remnant of my umbilical cord (it was all brown and disgusting, but a bit like a mole) until I was 21, 3 years after DH and I started dating, so I'm not bothered!!

HTH,

Stedders
xx

p.s. Good luck to all doing the Tesco Race for Life this year. I'm doing the Boston, Lincs one on Sunday morning, and currently have £65 sponsorship promised!! Yaay me!

Default what a good thread!

I too have had the pain of an epilator on my lower leg and lived to tell the tale! The hairs are thinning and I know it doesn't hurt as much now.
I really want to try it on upper leg but I am not that brave!!
On upper leg/bikini line I use veet (shower one) smells foul and sometimes doesn't work well but I do not really know what else to do!!
Arm pits I shave, I like to feel really smooth there and can't stand any hair growth waiting to cream!
On tummy I shave as I have so many hairs there! I wish I hadn't started though, I might try plucking but I'll be there forever!
I trim upper lip with scissors as I am very blonde so you can't really see it.
I pluck the hairs on my nipples out, ouch, but needed!!

Thinking of waxing upper legs myself, any good tips?

Good thread to read, thanks everyone!!!

I get electrolysis done on my chin and side burns once a week...although I am leaving a week and a half between sessions this week since my chin looks great! Just the fair ones left.

I use Dimples hair removing cream on my upper lip (I plucked a few hairs out with tweezers... that HURTS!!!!!)

I use tweezers around my breasts.

I shave all of my legs and under my arms and my tummy...a month ago though I used Veet ready to use wax strips on my legs and the hair still hasnt grown back there so I do think I will use them again. It hurts really bad though and its very patchy as I wasnt all that good at it!

I use a Venus razor with shaving gel to shave. I Love Venus. I also have an intution....its ok. I find the block of foam only lasts one and half shaves and also since I don't have the shaving gel as a guide to where I am shaving I miss loads of spots! lol

I never thought of waxing my tummy but I think I might give it a try since it lasts long...and the johnsons hair minimizing cream sounds good too!

Has anyone used a product called MOOM? It's a wax but is supposed to be like sugaring too as it's not supposed to pull on the skin. I'm tempted to try it but don't want to waste £15 if it's no good. Thanks

hey girls,

just thought i'd add part of my regime. the number one thing i've found are wax stips from wilkinson(their own brand), they only cost like £1.96 something and they work really well.

i've used them to wax pretty much everywhere. the best place has been my underarms. i know you're probably saying ouch. but if you all are like me and tried all kinds of crazy stuff you will appreciate the slight discomfort as the result is smooth soft underarms and the growth also becomes very minimum.

i recently went to a salon and had a brazilian wax done way down there and it was great. i've always wanted to have it done. even tried doing it myself but never could quite do it. i highly recommend it. i want to get it done again in a few weeks, so lets see what the results are as far as regrowth.

as i am of asian descent, we have this method called threading. you can do it yourself or have it done at an asian(indian/pak) salon. basically, it takes the hair from the root, like tweezing but much faster to do.

hope this is helpful to someone

Every four weeks I go to the salon and have my upper and lower legs, bikini line and underarms waxed (except when the weather is warm when I tend to shave underarms because I can't bear the grow back!!). Oh, and because I have a "brazillian" bikini wax they do my tummy as well.

Facially I'm not too bad but I use Boots facial removing cream for my upper lip about every 6 weeks.

Other than that I tweeze round my nipples and use Superdrug's own hair remover on my lower back before I go on holiday (it's covered the rest of the time!). Not that my back is really thick hair, but it is quite dark and is quite noticeable on the small of my back.
