Default Hairy probs ...

Hi ya everyone!!!

I was wondering if anyone has been able to get laser treatment on the NHS???

I've had PCOS (diagnosed) for about 5 years. I can deal with most of the cr*p, but the hair is the worst. Its killed any self-confidence i might of had - and combined with weight issues - i'm practically always down, depressed .

I know this treatment is available for some illnesses on the NHS etc, so I went to my doctor who didnt seem very certain. He refered me to 'Dermatology' who said that this treatment isnt available for PCOS, (although i'm sure i heard through the wall that they had doneit and werent going to do it anymore) so i wrote a letter! The reply suggested I try the local Primary Care Trust who have written to me this week to say, basically, the funds arent available.

I'm gonna keep trying and fighting, but i wondered if anyone else has encountered anything similar and/or succeeded?

Thanks lots,

Ju

PS. Started met 2 weeks ago, just increased to 2 a day (total1000mg) to go to 3. Lately i have my facial hair waxed, and just last week had my chest done - but its really sore and spotty. :o

Default Hairy Situation

Hi,

I don't know about laser therapy on the NHS ...But... I too have really horrid thick dark brown hairs on the back of my legs aswell as being nasty hairy everywhere else and I've found Nad's no heat wax gel to be the best at dealing with it. It doesn't stick to skin like regular wax - ok, it doesn't exactly tickle but you don't get that painful stinging burn afterwards like with other waxes out there. It can be bought in department stores or on line - the best and cheapest place is a UK site called Taras Choice.co.uk as they don't charge P&P.

Once you've whipped off the hairs, next day try using a hair minimising lotion (many skincare brands are doing them now) as this might also help keep it under control.

Good luck!

my GP told me last week that laser treatment and electrolosis were NOT available on the NHS!

I have been referred to a new Endo so I will be asking them if they can refer me for Laser treatment.

Interesting site link

It sure is available - when I was paying for mine the doctor I was seeing told me that they actually treat people on the NHS - she said - ask your doctor to write a letter into them and then they review it, so I told my doctor this and he said he would do it straight away and then next day I had a phone call to say any further treatment was all paid for on the NHS..............

Makes a hell of a lot of difference not having to pay!!!

i think you should ask again..

Good luck

Lynsey - how are you finding the treatments? I had 2 done a couple of years ago when I was still in the UK but in the end I couldnt afford it so i stopped and the growth gradually got just as thick.

Now I'm back in newcastle I might have a go at my doctor again! Although I'm not sure if they will treat me during pregnancy.

Default Laser Newcastle

I go to laserase in newcastle (freeman)- good but it hurts I think - quite a bit has gone now but it does come back - they said to me that they think everyone with PCOS should get it on the NHS... which I do too!!

I think you should just hassle your doctor - I did and it has saved me a fortune!

Good luck

Thanks Lynsey!

I wonder if there is a way I could be seen by a doctor known to laserase for the referal. MY doctor is so bad...everyone I know that goes to her can not stand her but in my area the surgeries are really full. I got taken off by accident when I used a surgery in London when I was working there for a few months and I had loads of trouble trying to find another doctor to take me on. Eventually the old surgery were forced to take me back onto their books.

My dad used to get free BUPA cover for the whole family and that was great! It ran out when I was 21
