12:15pm. I started having contractions again. I was really annoyed with myself as I thought here we go again, more Braxton Hicks to finish off the afternoon with. I kept glancing at the clock each time one would start just so that if I had to go to the hospital I could let them know what was happening.
1:15pm. After this had been going on for an hour, I realised that they were around 8mins apart. They were uncomfortable, so I decided to get a pen and paper and start writing the times down. Sure enough, exactly 8mins apart until about 2:30pm.
By then, I was hurting. I sent Mikey down the road to pay a bill and take some DVD's back, just incase we were busy later on. While he was gone I jumped in the shower hoping that would help at least with my backpain. Oh how wrong was I! I lasted in there a total of 10mins before getting out. The contractions were now 6mins apart and I had to rock my hips and breath through them. Mum (who was there looking after us all) asked me if I thought this might be 'it' to which I responded, 'ahhh I actually think this might be, I think i'm going to ring the hospital'. I rang them about 3:20pm, Mikey still wasn't home at this stage, and they said to come straight in. The contractions had now gone down to 5mins apart.
3:30. Mikey finally arrived home. We got everything together, kissed Liam and said we would ring soon to let Mum know what was happening. In the car I was in agony! Having to stay in the same position hurt badly, and of course, it was not only pouring outside but the afterschool traffic was a bit heavy so took us longer than usual to get to the hospital! Finally we arrived, after having to stop a few times on the way upstairs due to contractions we made it to the maternity ward. I was met by the midwife who I spoke to on the phone who took one look at me and said 'ok straight to birth suite for you'. That meant walking all the way back around to were we started from! Not happy at all!!
4:15pm. We met our new midwife Maiken (who was so lovely, couldn't have asked for a better midwife!). She did an internal while Mikey went down to move the car and found I was already 4cms dilated and very soft and stretchy which was great. I was over the moon as I'd passed the dreaded 3cms that I got stuck at with Liam. We got settled into the room more, while Maiken hooked me up to the monitors. She couldn't find Hamish's heartbeat with the CTG, as he kept moving so decided she would break my waters and put the monitor clip on his head. As soon as she did this, the contractions picked up just a bit more intensity but I was coping well with breathing, rocking and Mikey using a heatpack on my lower back.
5pm. I had found out the previous day that I was Group B Strep positive, so the Dr arrived to put a cannula in my hand so I could have the antibotics. He was a student Dr, and was very nervous (mind you so was I cause he was LOL). He finally found a vein after searching and flicking the back of my hand for 5mins. I was about ready to flick him back by this stage as I had to relax that hand when all I wanted to do was hold onto the chair and tight! After he had finished, and left the room (after saying all of 5 words to us) Maiken walked back in and said that the Dr had asked if he could participate in the delivery. We said yes, as I figured he would say anything and bug me LOL
5:30pm. Contractions are now around 2mins apart and very very intense. I asked for the gas to see if that would help. After about 15mins of that I gave up. Yes it did help a little bit, but I was putting in too much effort (as far as I was concerned!) trying to time it right that I was doing more harm then good.
5:50pm. I had reached the point of wanting to go home by this stage. I told Mikey to pack up, we were leaving i'd had enough. With that I had a massive contraction and started bawling the pain was so bad. Luckily Maiken was in the room at the time, and asked me if I wanted to try a Pethidene injection. I couldn't answer, so Mikey answered for me by saying yes. While she was out getting it ready, I decided I had to change position as I was too uncomfortable (I had a makeshift toilet happening LOL 2 chairs with a small gap in between allowing for a 'hole' effect to happen. Helped to open up my pelvis and sure did the treat since 5pm!). We decided on putting the bean bag up on the bed, me on my knees bending over the beanbag over the back of the bed.
5:55pm. Maiken gave me the Peth injection. I finally was then able to move after being yelled at by Mikey and Maiken to get up on the bed (I was out of it in pain and couldn't get the courage to move). I got up there and had another massive contraction. As soon as it had finished I said to Mikey, 'ohh great, now i'm finally up here I really need to go to the toilet, I think I need to push' (thinking I had to do #2's!). Maiken was just on her way out of the room when she heard me say this, and hightailed it back in and said 'did you just say push?'. I said yes, I need to go to the toilet. She said nope, I want to check to see your progress ok, then we will see. Unfortunately though, in that position she couldn't see properly so I had to move again. Off the beanbag, bed flattened, and me in agony cause I was on my back.
6:00pm. As soon as she did the internal she yelled out 'umm we are going to have this baby now'. I went into shock. I was thinking there was no way that could be right, I just had to go to the toilet and all would be ok once I had finished LOL. Maiken went into action stations, as she was no where near ready for this to be happening now. Another midwife came in to help get the stuff ready while Maiken gloved up and put on a apron. The student Dr got ready too and by 6:05pm, we were set to start pushing!
Maiken was worried because she had only just given me the Peth injection. She said I had to work hard cause she didn't want it to cross over to the baby. Luckily I was with it enough to understand what she meant so got down to business. It went very well, by about 6:12 they got a mirror for me so I could see the progress I was making with each push. I screamed and yelled the place down in anger as I didn't know what else to do. A few minutes later, inbetween pushes, the student Dr pipes up to Maiken and says 'umm why is she pushing now, she is only 4cms dilated?' I just looked at him, and so did everyone else. Maiken calmly says 'no dear she is ready, otherwise she wouldn't be pushing now. Plus see that, that is the baby's head, so she is more than ready to push'. I couldn't believe this guy! But it did give me something to focus on other than the burning pain that was happening. Finally, after some more pushes and progress I got even angrier and finally got his head out. Maiken made sure the cord was ok, and then out he came!!
Hamish came out very well. I had 2 small tears but didn't need any stitches (thank goodness, that was my biggest fear with VBAC!). He got apgars of 9 and 10, but then started grunting so was taken round to the special care nursery. He had to go round there anyway, as the Group B Strep antibiotics hadn't been in my system long enough (barely an hour instead of the minimum 2 they should have been), so he needed antibiotics himself to help prevent any problems. They diagnosed him with Respiratory Distress, and had him in the oxygen to help his lungs. This was all ok by Wednesday morning though thank goodness!
He was put in a humidcrib, a drip in his arm and lots more poking and proding the poor little man, but talk about a champion! He was able to come out of the crib for his first breastfeed at lunchtime Wednesday (which he did so well! straight on the breast no problem). They kept him in the crib to keep his temps stablised but was allowed out for feeds until they took him out the following day. He also had a dextrose drip to keep his blood sugar levels stablised. He came out of the SCN Thursday morning, and was allowed in to room with me. Because he was feeding like a champ, and all the tests came back ok, we were allowed home Friday lunchtime!
So in total, I was in labour for 5 hours, with 20mins of pushing, no stitches and I got my VBAC! A great end to an interesting pregnancy.
Thank you so much for sharing your story with us Mandi! That Dr sounds like a twit, I had a bit of a giggle at his actions, though I'm sure it was NOT funny at the time!! Good on you with the VBAC!!!

Dylan was sitting on my lap before, and he was very taken with the photos. He liked the one of Liam kissing his bubba brother! He said, "MMMMAAA bubba" then, "ahhh bubba"....
